Help local Scouts collect food Saturday
Eagle Editorial Board
Scouts of all ages are well-known for their good deeds and service to others. This weekend proves once again just how valuable these young men -- and women in the Venturing Crews for older teens -- are to this community.
On Saturday, hundreds of Scouts from 30 packs and troops will fan out across the community to pick up donated food for the Brazos Valley Food Bank. Last Saturday, the Scouts put hangtags on many area doors to advertise the event. Because even Scouts can't be everywhere at once, they will be able to pick up food donated at homes that received the hangtag last week.
There's still a way to donate if your neighborhood didn't receive the tags. You can take your donations to the food bank at 1514 Shiloh Avenue in Bryan or drop them in any Souper Bowl of Caring barrel in local grocery stores through Feb. 6.
H-E-B and Krogers stores also have prepackaged items needed by the Brazos Valley Food Bank. Customers may purchase them and the stores will deliver them to the food bank. Or, customers may purchase donation slips in $1, $3 and $5 denominations and the money will be used by the food bank to purchase needed foods.
Scouting for Food is the largest Scout service project in the country each year. The food collected locally on Saturday will feed lots of our hungry friends and neighbors who are suffering from the effects of a slow economy.
The food bank distributes almost 4 million pounds of food annually through 40 partner agencies through the Brazos Valley, but easily could -- and should -- distribute 500,000 more pounds if it could. Last year, the Brazos Valley Food Bank distributed food to some 45,000 different people in this area, and that number isn't likely to decrease this year.
The food bank always needs donations of food and money, and Saturday's Scouting for Food is a marvelous way to help. Please be as generous as you can.
Thank you to all the Scouts, their leaders and all the parents who are joining together to make this truly a "souper" weekend.
