Police to serve warrants soon
If you received a warrant for a ticket you forgot to take care of, you might want to address it before Feb. 25, when law enforcement agents will be arresting people with active warrants as part of the annual "Great Texas Warrant Roundup."
Whether at home or in the office, law officers will visit those with active warrants at any hour through March 11 to take them into custody. Most of these warrants, area law enforcement officials said, were issued for traffic-related citations.
Officer Jon Agnew with the Bryan Police Department said that most of the warrants are for minor citations.
"[The warrants] are typically for Class C [misdemeanor] citations, so they can be a code enforcement ticket -- anything from animal citations, for something like rabies violation, to traffic violations or city ordinance violations, like a loud music violation," Agnew said.
Most of the participating law enforcement agencies are offering an amnesty period through Feb. 24, during which people can address their warrant without being arrested.
Marshal Albert Reeder with the Bryan Marshal's Office said that there are approximately 8,000 active warrants from the city of Bryan, about 4,000 from College Station, and more than 15,000 between the justice of the peace, county and municipal courts. These numbers do not indicate the number of people who have active warrants, since some have more than one to their name.
"The main issue is really to clear a backlog of cases, and get everybody in compliance with the law. We're trying to get the community to fulfill their requirements and their obligations that they've agreed to," Reeder said.
Law enforcement agencies have attempted to notify those with active warrants by sending out post card notices, setting up an automated calling system and advertising the round-up on billboards.
"We really hate for people to have to go to jail, so, it's a great opportunity for people to go to their respective courts and take advantage of this time period to avoid going to jail," Reeder said.
