On Monday, the Bryan school board voted unanimously to move forward with installing artificial turf at Merrill Green Stadium, which also will get a new track.

Meanwhile, a partial artificial surface will go in at Rudder High School for practice purposes, officials said.

Bryan's Chief Financial Officer Amy Drozd said an estimated $1.3 million left from a 2009 bond that hasn't been earmarked for a specific project could be used to pay for the construction.

Athletic Director Harry Francis said maintaining artificial turf costs more the older it gets. However, he said, having the turf at both the high schools will increase the number of student groups able to use the space.

Francis said he also anticipates generating a 25 percent increase in revenue through renting out the fields during playoffs and for special events. The fields have been used sparingly due to wet weather conditions, he said.
