Charges filed in armed robbery
Eagle Staff Report
A Bryan man who led police on a foot chase last week was hit with additional charges while in jail this week for allegedly shooting a man twice before robbing his house, authorities said.
Christopher Wade Blake, 19, now faces three felonies -- two of them first-degree charges -- after being tied to a robbery that occurred the day before the Super Bowl, police said. He was originally arrested for fleeing police.
The robbery took place on Feb. 4 at a house in the 300 block of Ehlinger Drive in Bryan, where the homeowner told police he was hosting a party to celebrate receiving his tax refund. He said he answered a knock on the door and was confronted by two masked men with pistols.
The homeowner was shot twice -- once in the left arm and through his right wrist -- as he struggled to get the gun away from one of the men, police said.
Police said Blake was apprehended on Feb. 9 as he was pushing on a bathroom window while attempting to break into a house on Miller Street.
Officers confiscated a gun from him, but Blake was able to briefly elude police. He was caught after a short chase.
Blake, who was convicted of assault of a public servant in 2011, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He was also charged with evading arrest and on a warrant for parole violation.
Blake gave differing versions of his whereabouts during the Feb. 4 shooting, police said.
Officers said he eventually admitted to knowing the party was being held by "homosexuals" and decided to rob and beat up anyone inside the house.
Blake told investigators he had just been given the pistol by someone moments before being chased by police but eventually admitted the gun was the weapon used in the shooting of the homeowner, police said. Blake refused to admit he'd shot the homeowner.
On Monday, Blake was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and burglary of a habitation with the intent of committing a felony, each a first-degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
Blake remained in the Brazos County Jail on Tuesday in lieu of $212,000 bail.
