Warrant amnesty ends Friday
Residents who have outstanding warrants in College Station and Brazos County have through Friday to take action to avoid arrest before law officers come looking for them.
The warrant amnesty period that allows residents to pay fines and fees in full to avoid spending time behind bars will come to a close at the end of this week.
Ed Spillane, presiding judge of the College Station municipal courts, said anyone with a Class C misdemeanor arrest warrant is encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity, which will be followed by a statewide "Warrant Roundup" from Feb. 25 through March 10.
"A lot of people don't come in because they're saving their money or they think they won't be arrested," Spillane said. "But we have payment-plan coordinators to help and it's a statewide roundup so there's a good chance someone will be arrested if they don't come in."
Spillane said almost 60 people have come through his court already to clear their names, with the court collecting almost $17,000 from their warrants.
A complete list of people with pending arrest warrants and which courts are assigned to handle them can be viewed at cstx.gov/warrants.
"We just want people to clear their cases. We really don't want to arrest people," Spillane said. "Don't go through the embarrassment and the cost. There's no good place to be arrested."
