A Bryan woman recently released from prison remains behind bars on charges of trying to use a fake receipt to steal merchandise from a discount store, authorities said.
Bryan police said they were dispatched to Walmart on Briarcrest for a theft call about noon Tuesday.
Store employees told authorities that they witnessed Aubrie Rae Hughes, 31, placing multiple items in her shopping basket, police said. Hughes then went through the garden department and exited the store with more than $280 worth of items, according to police reports. Employees confronted Hughes outside the store, which is when she displayed the fake receipt, authorities said.
Hughes told police she recently was released from serving 18 months in jail, according to court documents.
She was charged with theft of less than $1,500. The charge was enhanced to a  a state jail felony, punishable by two years in prison, because she twice was convicted on felony theft charges. She also was charged with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana.
Hughes remained in the Brazos County jail on Wednesday without bail.
