Despite a furious comeback, College Station couldn’t overcome Houston St. Pius X and lost 58-41 on Sept. 15 at Cougar Stadium.
Trailing 31-7 at halftime, the Cougars (1-2) recovered an onside kick to start the second half, and Marquez Perez scored on a 4-yard run three plays later. College Station cut its deficit to 10 points when it recovered a St. Pius fumble and scored on DaDa Anderson’s 1-yard TD run.
That’s as close as the Cougars got. St. Pius’ Kaleb Ducros answered with a 73-yard touchdown run, and though College Station blocked the extra point, the Panthers maintained control the rest of the way.
“It was punch and counter-punch the whole second half,” head coach Steve Huff said. “We just gave up too much in the first half to try to stay with them in a shootout. They’re dang good. We knew that coming in, but at the same time we can’t make the mistakes we made against this team and [in a 35-28 loss to] Austin Westlake and win these type of games.”
Perez threw for 177 yards on 11-of-19 passing and added 100 rushing yards on 10 carries. Anderson ran for 92 yards on 23 carries, while Wellmann caught four passes for 76 yards and Spencer Maxwell had three receptions for 56 yards.
St. Pius junior quarterback Grant Gunnell threw for 473 yards and six touchdowns on 41-of-59 passing. Senior receiver Jacob Jefferson caught 14 passes for 211 yards and four TDs, and Jalen Curry caught 15 passes for 135 yards and a TD.
