Two College Station residents filed paperwork Thursday to fill an empty seat on the College Station City Council.
The filing period for the Place 5 seat previously held by Larry Stewart, who died in June, ends Aug. 27. Early voting begins Oct. 18.
John Nichols, 68, said he's lived in the community since 1968 and most recently served as the chairman of the city's planning and zoning commission. Nichols has also served on the city's community appearance committee, the parks and recreation board and several local organizations.
Nichols is a Texas A&M University professor and head of the department of agricultural economics.
"I believe it is important to serve the community in whatever way we can. My demonstrated commitment to serving the city of College Station and its citizens is the cornerstone of my campaign," he said in a statement.
Timothy Delasandro, 41, a registered nurse, ran for Congress in the 2010 Republican primary.
He said he opposes any increase in property taxes.
"I'm running for City Council because it's time for College Station to put our citizens first on its agenda. I believe that the Council must embrace fiscal restraint. College Station needs a more responsive -- and accountable -- leadership," he said in a statement.
Jana McMillan, 55, a retired paint contractor, was the first to file for the seat.
Election Day is Nov. 2, and the term will last through the first week of May, when the seat comes up for election.
