Two local Kroger Food Stores donated more than 1,000 pounds of baby food to the Brazos Valley Food Bank, store officials said.
The 1,220-pound donation was a small percentage of more than 86,000 pounds of baby food donated by Kroger to food banks in Houston, Montgomery County and elsewhere in Southeast Texas and to the End Hunger Network, Kroger spokeswoman Kristal Howard said.
Brazos Valley Food Bank Executive Director Theresa Mangapora said the gift was unusual, but because baby food is something food banks rarely receive in bulk.
"Things like diapers and baby food - those are very expensive, but very necessary items that parents need," she said. "It's a specialized product we don't get a lot."
