Dr. Ronald B. Kuppersmith recently successfully performed a robot-assisted endoscopic thyroid lobectomy at the College Station Medical Center.
Kuppersmith and Dr. Andrew deJong are among a handful of physicians in the nation trained to perform this procedure using a daVinci Surgical System.
The incision typically used for thyroid surgery is eliminated in this procedure, offering a more cosmetically appealing procedure to patients, officials said. The daVinci Surgical Robot also offers better visualization and instrumentation, the experts said.
"The ability to use the daVinci robot for thyroid surgery potentially represents a great step forward in patient care, provides new options for patients, and will allow for the procedure to be conducted without leaving unattractive scarring on the neck," said Kuppersmith, who is the president-elect of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
