In the past 50 years, The Eagle has never recommended a Democrat for president. We made no recommendations in 1960 and 1964 -- when Texas' own Lyndon B. Johnson was on the Democratic ticket -- nor did we in 1968 -- although we did praise Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey's position on the Vietnam War. We did not in 1976 and 1980. In 1972, The Eagle recommend Richard Nixon, in 1984, Ronald Reagan. We recommended George H.W. Bush in 1988 and 1992 and his son in 2000. We recommended Bob Dole in 1996.
Four years ago, the Editorial Board couldn't recommend George W. Bush for a second term, but we also couldn't recommend Sen. John Kerry either, so we made no choice.
This year is different, in large part because of the very difficult challenges facing this nation after eight years of a failed Bush administration. We are faced with a choice between Sen. John McCain, who claims to be an agent of change but promotes the policies of the past, and Sen. Barack Obama, who also wears the change mantle, but offers a vision for the future, even if he has yet to fully explain how he would carry out that vision if elected president in little more than two weeks.
Every 20 or 30 years or so, a leader comes along who understands that change is necessary if the country is to survive and thrive. Teddy Roosevelt at the turn of the 20th century and his cousin Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan -- these leaders have inspired us to rise to our better nature, to reach out to be the country we can be and, more important, must be.
Barack Obama is such a leader. He doesn't have all the answers, to be sure, but at least he is asking the right questions. While we would like more specificity on his plans as president, we are confident that he can lead us ever forward, casting aside the doubts and fears of recent years.
John McCain is a great American, no question. He served his country with honor in the Navy - enduring five years of hell in a North Vietnamese prison -- and he has represented Arizona and, indeed, the country well in the Senate. He has been a maverick at times, but his unbridled support for the Iraq War shows a lack of understanding at the weariness of the military and the country to remain much longer in a country unwilling or unable to govern itself.
Perhaps Obama won't be able to bring American men and women safely home from Iraq in the promised 16 months, but at least he is willing to make the effort.
Also of great concern is McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. Like Obama, she has little experience in governing, but unlike the Illinois senator, she is a candidate of little intellectual curiosity who appears to be hopelessly unready to be president. The fact that people are confused by the difference between Palin and comedian Tina Fey's caustic impersonation is clear evidence that Palin should not be, as they say, a heartbeat away from the presidency.
We also are dismayed by the tenor of the McCain-Palin campaign. If their goal is to severely wound an Obama presidency should that come to pass, they are dangerously close to succeeding.
It is time for America to look to its future with hope and optimism. It is time to say we can be better. It is time to redefine who we will be as a leader of nations.
With hope in our hearts and confidence in our choice, The Eagle recommends a vote for Barack Obama for president.

Comment Title: Hallelujah!
Thank you- Thank you! I honor you and appreciate your endorsement of Senator Obama. I am a Christian United Methodist and I think it's high time we, as Christians, start treating one another with dignity and kindness- especially if the person is an African American who happens to be running for President of our great nation. FYI- I am a white female. Thanks again.

Obama has run a clean, honest campaign. McCain has been an embarassment to the republican party. Eagle got it right, and the Brazos right will hollar a bit, A&M intellectuals will love it and young folks will jump for joy. Great debate and fun.

Comment Title: Obama's Policies Not Good For America
I am not a McCain fan. Let me say that up front. But I would much rather see him in the Oval Office than Senator Obama. No, I am not scared of his name or his skin color. My parents taught me long ago to respect a man's character over the color of his skin. My reasons are simple: 1. A tax policy that will hurt our economy more than help it. What some people don't seem to realize is that by taxing the rich more, we encourage them to "go play elsewhere". I could be wrong, but don't rich people own most of the businesses that create most of the jobs that we enjoy? If you don't think so, then try getting a job from a poor person! Oh, and a tax on business is still a tax on the people. Do you honestly think that a business (which has a goal to make a profit) is going to let that tax increase eat up its profit? Oh, and one more thing -- and this one's for Susan in Corpus Christi -- if someone takes their own ingenuity and ability, works hard, pursues and achieves that American dream and does become rich, what's not fair about that? How about seeking that person out to learn from them so that you, too, can pursue that dream rather than crying that it's not fair? 2. Experience. I am really surprised that people think that a man with a very thin political resume' is qualified to lead our nation. Senator Obama has not even completed a single term as U.S. senator. He has been on the global political scene for less than three years! 3. Moral issues. I believe that women have rights. Why do those rights not extend to unborn women who cannot speak for themselves? 4. Integrity issues. I am sorry, but I don't buy for a minute that Sen. Obama can sit under the spiritual mentorship of a pastor for twenty years and then claim not to know that pastor's views. If the pastor preaches those views from the pulpit, the there has to be a lie somewhere: either Obama knew the pastor's views, or he did not really attend church there. I know people may call me names and classify me as just another one of those paranoid conservatives for the last two reasons, but even if I threw those out, the first two are still pretty compelling. Barack Obama will not be good for our country.

Here is a Democrat, who is also a journalist. He sets the record straight not only about the finanical mess we are in but also the total lack of integrity on the part of the media. Will The Eagle print this? http://www.meridianmagazine.com/ideas/081017light.html

1) Who are "Doodad Pro" and "Good Will"? 2) Why is it easy to use a fake name and fake address to donate to Obama's campaign website? 3) What is the relationship between Obama and former PLO spokesman Rashid Khalidi? 4) What role did William Ayers play in launching Obama's career? 5) Why am I the only one asking these questions?

Comment Title: Good for the Eagle
While I support Barack Obama for president, I am disappointed that the Eagle's only reasoning is that he is "asking the right questions." The most disappointing aspect is that the Eagle's "endorsement" of Obama is more a refutation of the McCain/Palin ticket. For those of you who fear Barack Obama's "socialism," understand that John McCain believes the government should buy up bad loans at their (inflated) paper values and "hold them" until property values rise again. In doing so, he passes the losses these banks will incur on these properties onto the tax-payer. This is socialism of the worst kind - the kind that allows big money to keep the profits and pass the losses to the public. Additionally, why is tax cuts to "spread the wealth" less preferable than tax cuts that give all the money to the wealthy? Even the McCain/Palin campaign does not deny that the tax credits and cuts go preferentially to the wealthiest individuals and companies. Both campaigns offer redistribution policies. Barack Obama's is from the ground up and McCain's is from the top down. Top down redistribution is precisely what the Bush administration has done for the past 8 years. Except that it's not working. The prosperity is not trickling down. In addition, the obsession with deregulation is what brought us to this financial mess, however, the same kind of deregulation is what John McCain proposes for the health care industry - a dangerous proposition for the consumer. The private sector, for those of you who don't care to read the Obama's policy, is an essential element of the Democratic nominee's plan. The government's role is to be a player and keep the other private players honest. So before you attempt to latch the stigma of socialism on Barack Obama, look at your own candidate properly. There are extremely good reasons to vote FOR Barack Obama, not just against John McCain.

Comment Title: NObama Please!
Below are a few lines from Obama in his own words… From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.' From Dreams of My Father: 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.' From Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.' From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.' From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself, the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.' And FINALLY the Most Chilling one of ALL of them! From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.' If Barrack Hussein Obama becomes president and his form of socialism ushered into power, it will signal the beginning of the end of democracy in our country. Isn’t that why we fight wars, to protect democracy and freedom from becoming trampled and destroyed? Our government has fought two major conflicts against communism with thousands of lives heroically lost and many more living with the scars. Why are more Americans not fighting now? Today is as important as any other time to stand together against totalitarian rule in our country! Fight! Fight for our rights to say no to government sponsorship of abortion! Fight for our right of free speech and religion! Fight for our next generation, just as our forefathers fought for us! Fight Obama’s dark socialist agenda by standing together and voting NO to Obama and all who want to “change” our rights to be free!

So where exactly do you draw the line to call someone a socialist? Would bailing out the banking industry count? Is corporate socialism in some way welfare somehow an acceptable form of socialism? Unless you are a strict libertarian, then you accept some tenets of socialism. John McCain is no Libertarian. Six months ago, I thought John McCain would have made a fine president. Then we saw how he reacts under pressure. His most glaring fault is selling out to all those factions he fought when he used to be a maverick. I do not believe the comparison of McCain’s and Carter’s single mindedness under pressure to be inaccurate. And if you don’t remember the contrasting of Carter’s experience to Reagan’s lack of specific programs, then you lived through a different election than I did. My comment about Obama’s middle name was related to a previous poster whose comment was about as valid as someone who insinuates they get the last word by stating, “...enough said!!!”

Comment Title: Stirring the Pot
I know that I have left one comment already but after reading some of the others, I feel the need to add more. First, a name is just a name. Barack Obama's name imposes no harm to anyone or is Anti-American in any way- no more so than being named John Smith. Please stop trying to use it as a scare tactic because it really does appeal to those small minded individuals that don't think outside the box and are in complete denial that the world is always changing and evolving, including the Untited States of America. Those that use such fallacies to form their logic are the ones that are scared. Scared that they aren't in control. The realization that I have come to as of the last week is that the McCain campaign is desperate and already preparing for a defeat as they are doing everything they can to undermine Barack Obama as President. Mostly, by putting fear into people and that is just flat out wrong. This nation is already volatile enough without adding fuel to the fire. Seriously, Barack Obama is not a terrorist nor does he have terrorist ties- everyone wants to know where he is getting all of his campaign money from- well for starters, people like me. McCain is further dividing this nation by using such tactics in his campaign and I have frankly had enough of it. To suggest that terrorists will attack us to test Barack Obama as President is ridiculous. There is no such promise that anything of the sort will happen. These are not the issues that I am facing at hand right now. I am facing issues of credit, savings, my crap health insurance, and my daughter's education.... nothing that he has taken time to address. Why doesn't McCain take some of that energy and focus on something that really matters to American people. As for spreading of the wealth- here is something to put in perspective.... the top 1% of our nation's wealthiest hold more wealth than the bottom 50%. I don't know about you- but as Joe Biden says- that ain't fair and it is obviously not working or we wouldn't be in this mess. Here is how I would describe why we are in the financial crunch that we are- imagine a poker game- it has been going for awhile and two men at the table of six hold all of the chips and the other guys keep borrowing and borrowing against their credit until there is nothing more that they can borrow. The poker game is the American dream and just because you lose a couple of hands you're expected to quit and give up on your dream- well.... that isn't the American dream, now is it?

Comment Title: Excited
First, I would like to state how excited that I am that The Eagle has endorsed Barack Obama for President of the United States. I was born and raised in College Station and have always been proud of where I come from. However, not many people share the same ascetic for my hometown as I do. More often than not, people view College Station as a town of very right wing conservatives that do not so much as even look to the left, than for any reason other than to check that the road is clear of traffic to cross safely. When I refer to "people" it is in regards to those that are not from College Station or have been a student of Texas A&M University, as that anyone that falls into those two categories often offer this explanation- "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it and from the inside looking out, you can't explain it." It must be stated that this notion of extreme conservatism found to be commonly true. But why? What is it that makes College Station so typically conservative? I truly can't answer that question even though I lived there for the majority of my life. It's just a fact and one in which most people, Aggies and alike are proud of and often boast about. Is it a fad like a cool pair of shoes? Is it in the water? No one knows.... I ask this of everyone in College Station to look outside the maroon box and look at the world- it is much bigger and far more complex than you can imagine. Look at both the candidates- their records, tax policies, healthcare reform- everything and anything about them. Barack Obama and John McCain have fundamental differences that will affect you one way or another- negatively or positively. Make your own decision and if it isn't for John McCain- know that it is okay to do so. Go against the grain! The choice is yours and the time is now. That is why I am so excited to see The Eagle make their endorsement for Barack Obama, as well as Colin Powell and Maedline Albright.

Comment Title: Floyd's amusing comparisons and inferences
I am quite certain that I never mentioned Obama's middle name, much less argued that it was a reason for voting against him--you did so. As for comparing McCain to Carter, you obviously know nothing of history. You picked out one dubious comparison, re McCain focusing on the economic crisis in the same fashion that Carter focused on the Iran Hostage crisis. There are so many differences between the two cases as to make your comparison laughable. To assert that Obama is a visionary in the same mold as Reagan is even more so. That would be like saying that Lenin, Mao, Reagan and Obama are all alike simply because they are/were "visionary." Try examining the philosophy and policy preferences behind Reagan and Obama and you couldn't find two more different people. Without using the word too lightly, Obama is a socialist--just check out his economic policies and his own stated positions. Obama is a tax and spend lefty who will "spread the wealth around." Reagan was a proponent of free markets and individual responsibility.

Comment Title: Interesting Comparison
Funny that one should mention the decision between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in comparison. Though their politics obviously differ, I would liken McCain to Carter, both former military and both micro-managers. McCain's decision to suspend his campaign and devote his full attention to the nation's financial crisis was eerily reminiscent of Carter’s fixation on the Iran hostage crisis. On the other hand, Obama represents a visionary much as Reagan was. All the same arguments were used in reverse in the 1980 election. So before you assert that enough is said, you may want to review your comparison. You are better off sticking to your soundest argument, that Obama’s middle name is Hussein. Then you will at least garner the small-minded vote.

Comment Title: The Height of Stupidity
The gist of this editorial endorsement seems to be "We don't have a clue what Obama stands for or what he will do as president, but he has to be better than McCain." Let me quote John F. Kennedy, favored son of Democrats everywhere, "I believe the old Emersonian advice that what you are speaks far louder than what you say is the best possible advice in judging a political campaign." We don't know much about Obama because of the negligence of the mainstream media in vetting him, but we at least know this: he talks a good game but he is a man of very little experience and substance and very poor judgment. As for the Eagle endorsement, anyone who has lived in Bryan/College station knows better than to subscribe to the Eagle. Second, anyone who takes advice from a newspaper editorial board on who to vote for as president is a moron. Third, this is the same paper, probably different editorial board, that couldn't decide between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980 . . . enough said!!!

Comment Title: Did You Change Editors?
Congratulations on the Eagle's good recommendations in years past. What happened this year - did you change editors? Barack Obama is indeed gifted in getting people to follow him. Unfortunately, he intends to lead them in a direction to "spread the wealth" - with government-imposed "spreading". His support for abortion is among the most extreme in Congress. His time-tabled withdrawal from Iraq may please the Iraqis, but cues the enemies of Iraqi freedom when to time their next offensive. Sen. Obama plans to involve the U.S. more deeply in Afghanistan. When choosing a leasder, direction is even more important than effectiveness. I would prefer more George W. Bush to Barack Obama. John McCain is quite a bit different from George W. Bush, but even more different from Barack Obama. Sen. McCain is the better choice.
