Religion Notes

Saturday

* Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1004 Hall St. in Bryan, will hold a black history celebration at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be the Rev. George "Positive" Beckworth, and the musical guest will be Desire Choir. The public is invited.

Sunday

* St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 217 W. 26th St. in Bryan, will hold worship services at 7:30, 9 and 11:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. At 10:15 a.m., coffee and refreshments will be served during a discussion on Genesis. * Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 Texas 6 in College Station, will hold services at 8:15, 9:30 and 11 a.m. The Rev. Jerry House Jr. will continue the sermon series "The Gospel of John." Sunday school for all ages is at 9:30. Child care is available during all three services and Sunday school. The church will also hold a Healing and Wholeness service led by the Rev. Tommy Myrick at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

* New Testament No. 2 Outreach Church, 1218 Ettle St. in Bryan, will offer a men's day program at 3 p.m. The guest speakers will be the church's own Joeshua Love and Donald Maxey of Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Cawthon. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Kelon Dalton of Castle Heights Baptist Church in Bryan. The musical guests are Christ Holy Baptist Church Male Chorus of College Station, Bethel Grove Baptist Church Male Chorus of Cawthon, Truvine & Macedonia Community Male Chorus of Bremond, Brother Benny Lewis of Anderson and Ontime Gospel Singers. Morris House preaching on "Why I Love the Church" as part of this year's Blackwell Lecture Series. Sunday school classes meet at 9:45 a.m. Child care is provided for all worship services. Monday

* First United Methodist Church, 506 E. 28th St. in Bryan, will hold a service at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Rev. Morris House will speak and he will be joined by the Rev. Jerry House of Christ United Methodist Church in College Station. This event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday

* Covenant Presbyterian Church, 220 Rock Prairie Road in College Station, will present the first in a series of "Hot Potato Topics" at 6:20 p.m. Fred A. Medina, attorney at law, will take a look at capital punishment in Texas and the U.S., focusing on religion as it pertains to this controversial subject. The subject matter will include graphic descriptions of crime scenes and the death chamber of the condemned. Attendees are asked to be respectful of others' opinions.

Friday and March 6

* St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 217 W. 26th St. in Bryan, will hold a Lenten retreat beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m., which will include a light supper in the Parish Hall. The program will be "Adventures in Prayer: Preparing for the Trip," led by Kathleen Phillips. A children's activity will also be held, and the nursery will be open for children under the age of 4.

The retreat will continue March 6 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pastries and coffee will be served. The program will be "Adventures in Prayer: The Trip Begins." The group will visit several destinations within the church to experience different types of prayer. Comfortable clothes are recommended.
