Yoga retreat aims to energize B-CS practitioners

B-CS yoga teachers Korin Brody and Carie Garrett are trying to create a Brazos Yoga Connection to bring together the area's instructors and show some of the almost infinite forms of the ancient practice.

The pair have partnered with two other instructors to hold a June workshop called "Guided from Within: Freedom Style Yoga." Garrett said the workshop is for teachers and all level of practitioners -- anyone who wants a deeper, more personal understanding of yoga.

Assisting with the workshop will be Heather Applegate and Marnie Krajicek.

Brody, 38, has been teaching yoga in College Station for almost seven years. Her classes are at Expressions Dance Studio, 1816 Ponderosa in College Station.

"There are many flavors of yoga," Brody said. "It's been around 5,000 years. All the ancient India gurus had their own way. In the U.S., we typically think of postures, but it's really much, much more. There are at least eight individuals teaching locally, and each has their own kind of yoga. People teach at different times and cater to different groups."

Garrett, 43, came to yoga from a background of modern dance and teaching group exercise for 25 years. She is a 1983 graduate of A&M Consolidated High School and has been teaching yoga for eight years.

Her classes are held at Friends United Congregational Church, the site of the workshop.

"I took classes with yoga gurus who lived on ashrams and studied in India," Garrett said. "I'm ready to share it. This is my lifelong journey."

During her studies, Garrett said, she came upon the book Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness by Erich Schiffmann.

"That changed my world overnight," Garrett said. "He described yoga poses in terms of lines of energy. He made it seem natural, how to live yoga, not just do the poses. The very next day I taught differently.

"I took a workshop from him in Austin, and everything fell into place," she said. "I became his apprentice. We talk every day. It's a traditional guru-apprentice relationship the way it is done in India."

The workshop sessions will be from 7-9 p.m. June 6, and from 9 a.m. to noon and 2-5 p.m. June 7 at Friends United Congregational Church, 2200 Southwood Drive in College Station.

Tuition paid by Friday is $80; after that date the cost is $95. Space is limited. Registration information is online at www.cariegarrett.com.

Yoga is for all ages and all physical capabilities, Brody said.

"I teach chair yoga. I have a woman who has no use of one leg. She does it in a chair and loves it," she said. "One woman has vertigo, so I modified the poses, and she comes every week. Yoga is not aerobics."

Applegate teaches at Studio Yoga inside StudioFit, 2423 Earl Rudder Freeway in College Station.

"I've been practicing yoga for 12 years," Applegate said. "I loved how much better my body felt. I decided to combine my love of yoga and love of teaching."

Krajicek is a former elementary school teacher who conducts yoga classes for children ages 4-12.

"Children are in a constant state of going," Krajicek said. "They respond to stillness. They learn where they can push to and be comfortable. It's very mental. To see kindergartners or first-graders respond to yoga is very exciting."

Krajicek is holding a children's yoga camp July 15-17. For more information, go to www.dancingyogis.net.

"Even if someone can't come to the workshop, we hope they will contact one of us and get involved," Brody said. "We would really like to spread the word about yoga and let people know how many classes are offered. There are times that fit into anyone's schedule. Yoga is for everyone."
