Club Scene for April 20

Bruce Lockett, director of the Texas Archaeology Study Association, will discuss Civil War sites from Millican to the Sabine River at the next meeting of the Texas Research Ramblers Genealogical Society.

The association is exploring, identifying and collecting information on new finds such as the Bunns Bluff shipwreck off of Sabine Pass, the World War I fleet in Conway Bayou, a Confederate camp at Millican, and an Atakapa village on the Trinity at the Leon County/Madison County line.

Lockett, who is also president of the Vidor Historical Society, will speak to the group at 9:30 a.m. April 30 at 1651 Rock Prairie Road in College Station. Visitors are welcome.

Doug Welsh of Texas AgriLife Extension spoke about "Roses for the Brazos Valley" at the April 11 meeting of the A&M Garden Club. Selection of roses, planting and soil preparation, insect and disease management, pruning, and care were discussed. A handout also was distributed.

President Idalia Aguilar reported on awards: first in state and $25 for World Gardening Project. Judy Schafer shared photos from the Killeen State Convention and issues of Lone Star Gardener. Mary Ann Taylor, on behalf of the club, presented a special orchid to Aguilar for her service to the club as president for two years.

The club reported 10 memorials for Polly Hatcher.

The next meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. May 9 at the Exit Teen Center. The agenda includes the program "Floral Arrangements in History," officer installation and a Dutch treat lunch.

The Brazos Valley Arthritis Support Group met April 14 with the Arthritis Walk committee at St. Joseph Education Annex in Bryan. They discussed the details and formed committees for the second annual Arthritis Walk, which will take place Oct. 4 at Veterans Park in College Station.
