Hospice Brazos Valley raised a record $117,000 with its 18th annual Hospice Happening fundraiser. The event, called Steak Rattle & Roll, was held in the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan.
More than 900 tickets were sold to raise money for Hospice Brazos Valley's mission: providing quality care for individuals -- and their families -- who have been touched by a life-limiting illness, grief and loss.
An Elvis Presley-style performance got the crowd ready for the Feb. 16 diversions, which included silent and live auctions, gaming and dancing.
Kim Augsburger, Hospice community resource associate, and her committee worked with local business within the local hospice's 17-county service area to organize this year's Hospice Happening. The businesses contributed goods, services, time and talent.
The dinner, with steak and chicken as entrees, was catered by Buppy's. Wally and Stephanie Johnson bid $2,300 for the live auction's hottest item, a Memphis travel package for two.
Woman's Club celebrates spring
Colorful flowers on checkered tablecloths, oven-fried chicken and apple pie, and a Houston jazz ensemble set a seasonal theme for the annual Spring Luncheon held March 5 at The Woman's Club in Bryan.
Members and guests enjoyed traditional picnic fare prepared by co-chairs Cathy Godfrey and Sally Godfrey and the luncheon committee. The decorations committee, led by Joyce Perkins and Marilyn Jones, created the festive table decorations.
A lively performance by Classic Jazz, an all-woman Houston jazz ensemble, followed the luncheon.
Special guests at the luncheon were couples opening their homes for the club's annual House and Garden Tour fundraiser on April 9: Dr. Michael McKinney, Texas A&M University System chancellor, and his wife, Lou Ann; Donald and Pat Hlozek; and Paul and Tina Gardner.
