Teacher excellence

Romona Maxim of Bryan was awarded a national Teacher Excellence Award at the American Driver Traffic Safety Education Association Conference in Fort Worth this summer.

Maxim is a supervising instructor at the Region VI Educational Service Center in Huntsville. She supervises and teaches driver education at A&M Consolidated, Caldwell and Rockdale high schools. She also teaches alternative certification classes for driver-education instructors and bus-driving certification classes.

She is a board member of the Texas Driver Traffic Safety Education Association and serves as a board member. Maxim has taught driver education for 22 years and is married to Joseph Emory Maxim, who is manager of quality assurance for the National Center for Electron Beam Research at Texas A&M University.

The award was sponsored by the American Automobile Association.

Blinn College band

The Blinn College Buccaneer Band has chosen Harry D. Blake as its new director after longtime leader Larry Campbell became the chairman of fine arts at the college's Brenham campus.

Blake joins the Blinn staff with more than 40 years' experience directing at the high school and college levels. He has directed band programs across the country, including at DeSoto, San Antonio MacArthur and Killeen high schools in Texas, and the Fort Hunt High School band in Fairfax County, Va. His college experience includes Cameron University in Oklahoma, the University of Las Vegas and Frostburg State College in Maryland.

The Buccaneer Band, with students representing 68 high schools, made its initial performance Oct. 4 as Blinn hosted Tyler Junior College at Spencer Stadium.

Cooking prize

Allison and Thomas Burton of College Station were chosen as one of ten winners in Virginia Tech University's sixth annual Home Sweet Home Recipe Contest.

Two hundred and fifty families from 10 states and China submitted recipes in the contest for university families.

The Burtons' recipe, Mama Burton's enchiladas, will be featured at the Home Sweet Home special dinner Oct. 24. The Burtons will also receive a cookbook featuring all of the recipe entries and a personalized cutting board. The students of the winning families will receive $50 in Dining Dollars.

Area students

* Julia O'Hern of College Station has been awarded a $2,000 Marine Technology Society Scholarship for Graduate and Undergraduate Students. O'Hern is pursuing a doctorate in biological oceanography at Texas A&M University.

* Jared Farris of Bryan has earned a place on the Dean's Honor Roll for the 2008 summer semester at Texas State Technical College Waco.

Farris, a student in welding technology, is among those recognized with a scholastic achievement of a 3.5 to 3.9 grade-point average for the semester.

* Bryan resident Monica Sharkawi has been awarded an Accounting Education Foundation scholarship from the Texas Society of CPAs. Sharkawi is a student at Texas A&M University.

The group's Accounting Education Foundation awards scholarships annually based on accounting students' academic achievements.

The Woman's Club

The Woman's Club held its annual President's Tea on Oct. 1, honoring JoAnn Locke as the 2008-09 Club president and recognizing the new board of directors.

The women serving on the board are Nancy Beard, Margaret Jakubik, Alice Hickerson, Arlene Wood, Martha Trotter, Ruth Newton, Mary Anne Kornegay, Donna Beto, Martha Murphy, Mary Evelyn Bayliss, Erin Kracht and Joyce Perkins.

In this special event, the new officers welcomed the members of the Club to the new season of friendship and service.

The Social Committee, led by Becky Horlen, planned and hosted the tea, and served homemade refreshments to the guests. Flower arrangements, in the president's favorite colors of all shades of pink to burgundy, were provided by Club members in Locke's honor. The theme for the 2008-09 Club year is a quote from Aesop, "No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted."

Texas Democratic Women

Justice Linda Yanez, who is running for Texas Supreme Court Place 8, was the featured speaker at the Texas Democratic Women -- Brazos Valley's Bi-annual Blue Denim Luncheon/Fundraiser, held Oct. 5 at Briarcrest Country Club in Bryan. The purpose was to raise funds to help support female Texas candidates running for office and provide scholarships for female high school seniors.

Needs a home

Mariah is a female kitty with beautiful gold eyes and a soft coat -- all browns and golds and reds. She is very loving. Meet Mariah and other animals available for adoption at the Brazos Animal Shelter (www.brazosanimalshelter.org) at 2207 Finfeather Road in Bryan. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Master Gardeners

The Brazos County Master Gardeners assisted yardeners and gardeners with their purchases at the Fall Plant Sale held Sept. 27 at the Brazos County Extension Office. A large selection of heirloom plants and bulbs were available for purchase. Proceeds from the plant sale will be used to support the educational seminars and demonstration garden sponsored by the master gardeners.

Kiwanis Club

Shana Elliott was installed as president of the Kiwanis Club of College Station at the club's Sept. 30 meeting at the College Station Hilton. Shana and her husband, Chad, are the proud parents of twin girls, "miracle babies" Annabelle and Andie, who underwent in-utero surgery.

Also installed were President-Elect Larry Ringer, Vice President Murry Milford, Treasurer Robert Simpton and Secretary Alan Montgomery.

In addition, the following members will serve on the club's board of directors: Adilia Frazer, Flynn Adcock, Roger Feldman, Roger Sheridan, Jerry Gritter, Charles Magnuson, Ruth McMullan and Omer Jenkins. Immediate past-president Glenn Duhon will continue on the board for the next year.

Gritter was also presented with the prestigious Hixson Award. Gritter has been the heart and soul of service in the Kiwanis Club for many years. Denise Magnuson was named College Station Kiwanian of the Year in recognition of her work and dedication.

Brazos Valley Food Bank

The Brazos Valley Food Bank received a $5,000 donation from the Bridal Association of the Brazos Valley. The donation came from the proceeds of the association's Fall Bridal Show and Benefit.

The check was presented Tuesday evening during a dinner and meeting at the Brazos Cotton Exchange in downtown Bryan.

College Station

Two BVSWMA employees brought home 2nd place awards in the International Road-E-O held in Kentucky this past weekend. Larry Tinney and Elmer VanHoorebeke Jr., Equipment Operators at BVSWMA's Rock Prairie Road Landfill, competed in the Texas Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America's Road-E-O held in Houston earlier this year.

Both employees took first place in their competitions allowing them the opportunity to compete at the International level. Larry Tinney, a five year BVSWMA employee, took second place in the bulldozer competition. Elmer VanHoorebeke Jr., a three year BVSWMA employee, took second place in the compactor competition.

Samantha Best, BVSWMA Landfill Manager stated "We were excited to have these two gentlemen represent the BVSWMA and the great State of Texas at the event. We are extremely proud of their performance."

The purpose of the Road-E-O is to promote professionalism and safety on the part of drivers, operators, and mechanics in the field of solid waste management and to facilitate a spirit of competition and goodwill. The Road-E-O gave participants a rare opportunity to network with their peers and solid waste professionals throughout the United States.
