Higher education

* Ashley Christine Gage of Bryan has earned a master of arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

* George Duckworth of College Station recently was elected president of Delta Epsilon Iota at Texas Lutheran University. Duckworth, the son of Ron and Alison Duckworth, is a junior applied science major. He is a graduate of A&M Consolidated High School.

Delta Epsilon Iota is a national honor society for upperclassmen students with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher.


Military

* Navy Seaman Recruit Bryan A. Robertson, brother of Elissa A. Robertson of College Station recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Robertson is a 2008 graduate of Foster High School of Richmond.

* Navy Seaman William H. Phillips, son of Nora C. Phillips of Caldwell and Tom H. Phillips of Deer Park, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Phillips is a 2003 graduate of Deer Park High School.


Needs a home

Prestina is a year-old classic red tabby. She's a polydactyl, which means she has extra toes. She loves to be held and can be really goofy. Meet her at the Brazos Animal Shelter (www.brazosanimalshelter.org) at 2207 Finfeather Road in Bryan. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.


Conservation prize

Mary Strauss, sustainability programs coordinator for the city of Bryan, received the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution National Conservation Award recently. The award was presented by Anna Kellett, regent of the William Scott Chapter.

Strauss has incorporated conservation in her own life.

She and her husband, Josiah, had a green wedding in 2003, incorporating recycled clothing and decorations and had rings made of recycled gold.


A&M Consolidated High School

The 2008-09 A&M Consolidated High School Bengal Belles performed at the Special Olympics on Oct. 25 at the Brazos County Expo Center.


Brazos Christian School Homecoming

The Brazos Christian School 2008 Homecoming court members are: Desiree Benthul, Lauren Browning, Tamra Thompson, Chelsea Brumbaugh, Lauren Paine, Stephanie Stimson, Michelle McClellan and Adrienne Wythe. Homecoming Queen Lauren Paine was crowned Oct. 31 during the football game against Shiner St. Paul Cardinals.


Rotary Club

Four Bryan Rotarians -- Larry Catlin, Barbara Pearson, Jere Blackwelder and Morris Gelber -- cooked and served about 700 meals of beans, rice, sausage and cornbread with all the trimmings at the Bryan Rotary Club's annual "Time of Caring" supper Oct. 27. The event benefits several community nonprofit organizations that the club helps support throughout the year.


Midway VFD

Last month, the Midway Volunteer Fire Department's annual Fall Fest cook-off chose winners in eight categories. The event included a trail ride and auction.

Hot Ash Cookers, led by head cook Danny Butts, placed first in beans, second in the open category, second in chicken, first in ribs, second in brisket, best decorated area, most unique pit and first overall.

Saddle Sore Cookers, with head cook Geraldene Farris, placed first in chili, fourth in the open category, fourth in chicken, sixth in ribs and third in brisket.

Karli Gilbert of Hook 'Em and Cook 'Em Juniors placed first in the open category, seventh in chicken, seventh in ribs and sixth in brisket.

Hook 'Em and Cook 'Em 1, led by Chris Gilbert, placed sixth in the open category, first in chicken, second in ribs and fourth in brisket.

Frontier Cookers, with head cook Lance Ferguson, placed fifth in the open category, fifth in chicken, third in ribs and first in brisket.

Not Liable's Dan Evans placed third in the open category, third in chicken, eighth in ribs and seventh in brisket.

Los Gordos Cooking Team, led by Ricardo Alvardo, placed seventh in the open category, sixth in chicken, fifth in ribs and eighth in brisket.

Wanna Bee's, with head cook Jodie Forrest, placed fourth in ribs and fifth in brisket.


Brazos Valley Food Bank

The Brazos Valley Food Bank recently held its annual partner agency training at the College Station Conference Center. The session covered poverty, communicating effectively with those we serve, civil rights, food safety, ordering from the food bank and how to fill out paperwork.

Each year, the food bank honors partner agencies that go above and beyond in their efforts to alleviate hunger in their communities.

The top four distribution pantries in 2007 were First Baptist Church of College Station, with 132,990 pounds; Brenham Church of Christ, with 180,157 pounds; Bread Partners of Washington County, with 190,105 pounds; and Brazos Church Pantry, with 246,383 pounds.

The Best All Around Agency award was given to Robertson County Cares of Franklin. This award goes to a pantry that is faithful about turning in required paperwork, paying invoices and -- most importantly -- serving their community well for many years.

The Shining Star Award went to Bobbie Lina of Elizabeth Lutheran Community Church in Caldwell.


Academic award

Dr. John L. Park has been named to the endowed Roy B. Davis Professorship in Agricultural Cooperation at Texas A&M University. Park is an associate professor in the department of agricultural economics at Texas A&M and a Texas AgriLife Extension Service economist.

Park is on the board of the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council. His research focuses on value-added agriculture and management issues facing co-ops and other ag and rural businesses.

Star Duplicate Bridge Club met Oct. 24 at the College Station Conference Center. Winners were:

Texas A&M Health Science Center

The Texas A&M Health Science Center and city of Bryan hosted a joint flag-raising Wednesday at the new Bryan campus.

Surrounded by heavy machinery and dozens of construction workers, Dr. Nancy W. Dickey, president of the Health Science Center and vice chancellor for health affairs for the Texas A&M University System, joined Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee for the ceremonial event as the A&M System makes its first permanent physical presence in the city. They were flanked by top administrators from each organization and key project personnel.

The A&M System Board of Regents approved the allocation of about 200 acres along Texas 47, adjacent to Traditions Club Golf Course to the health science center in December 2006, having earlier accepted a $6.6 million land gift from Bryan.

Junior League of Bryan-College Station

The Junior League of Bryan-College Station has chosen its 2008-09 executive officers and board. The executive committee is: Sheryl Welford, president; Sherry Jennings, executive vice president; Daphanie Thomasson, community vice president; Debra Matthews, finance vice president; Cherry Kay Wolf, communication vice president; Karen Royal, membership vice president; and Trudy Bennett, fund development vice president.

In addition to the members of the executive committee, the directors are: Chrissie Hall, bylaws; Sherah Syptak, long range planning; Adrienne Bentz, membership development; Rebecca Melder, nominating & placement; Tami Swigert, public relations; Robin Williamson, research & development; Cortney Tenhet, supersellers; Sheila Birnbaum, member-at-large; and Jan Lee, sustaining adviser.

Junior League members will focus on donating to nine community projects this year.

Student-athlete

Sarah Wehrly of College Station is one of 21 Carleton College student-athletes in winter and spring sports to earn academic all-conference honors from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Wehrly graduated from Carleton in June and played tennis for the Knights.

To be awarded academic all-conference, student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must compete in half of their team's contests.
