Military

* Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordan K. Petrus, son and stepson of David W. and Kay Petrus of West Monroe, La., and son and stepson of Brenda K. and Robert A. Walls of Rockdale, recently completed the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit course at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Goose Creek, S.C.

Upon completion of the course, Petrus was designated a nuclear power operator.

Petrus is a 2006 graduate of Blue Valley North High School of Leawood, Kan., and joined the Navy in October 2007.

* Navy Seaman Apprentice Joshua E. Plummer, son of Donna S. and Dennis A. Foster of Hilltop Lakes, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Plummer is a 2008 graduate of Normangee High School.


Higher education

* Louisiana Tech has announced the names of students on its fall quarter President's and Dean's honor lists. Jeremy Alan Hardey of Bryan made the President's Honor List by earning at least a 3.8 grade-point average. Nor Ali Ktiri-idrissi of College Station made the Dean's list with a gpa of at least 3.5.

Louisiana Tech's fall quarter commencement exercises awarded diplomas to 321 graduates, including Sarah Lynn Newton of Bryan, master of business administration; and Ryan Samuel Sale of Beaumont, doctor of business administration.

* Zachary C. Tinkle of Tyler graduated from Oklahoma State Univeristy Institute of Technology in August with an associate's degree in Applied Science in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology -- Natural Gas Compression.


Navasota schools

Navasota ISD has unveiled a 6-foot-4-inch bronze Rattler statue in front of Rattler Stadium. The statue was created by 1990 Navasota High School graduate J. Payne Lara. Navasota businessman Chuck Frede and former school superintendent John C. Webb were instrumental in garnering support and raising funds from local Rattler supporters and local businesses for the bronze sculpture. The community turned out for both the dedication ceremony and a Rattler pep rally following the dedication as they showed support for the 9-0 District 24-3A Champion Rattlers before they took on the Silsbee Tigers for the Class 3A Region III Regional Championship. The game was at Sam Houston State University. Navasota won 48-33 to advance to the third round of the state playoffs.


Brazos Community Foundation

At the Brazos Community Foundation's National Philanthropy Day Celebration, held at The Woman's Club in Bryan, 10 Brazos Valley nonprofit organizations received Foundation Community Grants. SOS Ministries

Members of the SOS Ministries Board of Directors celebrate the groundbreaking of its Ministry Center last week. The Ministry Center has been the vision of founder J.J. Ramirez since the organization's inception 15 years ago and is the first building of a 20-acre planned development on the west side of Bryan. SOS Ministries has raised $2.7 million of the $3.2 million needed for the project, due to be completed next fall.


Junior League

The Junior League of Bryan-College Station held its annual charity ball recently at the Hilton Hotel in College Station. The theme was "Splendor." Entertainment was provided by the band The Sauce as well as members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Brazos Valley.


Milano Lions

Lion Nina Clymer presents a certificate of appreciation to Clay Coppedge for a program presented to the Milano Evening Lions Club this month at the Milano Senior Citizens Center.

Coppedge works for ag newspaper Country World and writes a column for online newspaper Texas Escapes. He spoke about his reporting career, which began in Lubbock and extended to eastern Tennessee and then back to Georgetown, Round Rock and Temple.

The stories included a murder trial which saw the acquittal of a man who had shot the victim for kicking the man's dog. Coppedge also told of arriving at the scene of a stabbing -- ahead of the authorities -- and being greeted by the knife-wielding assailant.

Coppedge lives in Williamson County.


La Villita DAR

The regular meeting of the La Villita Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was called to order by Regent Sheila May.

Tom Turbiville and Bill Youngkin were presented awards for their efforts in recognizing area veterans and recording their stories via the newspaper and television.

Member Betty Davis presented "The Story of Old Glory," about the history of the American Flag.

Frances Henry reported that chapter members commemorated Veterans Day by placing 686 flags on veterans' graves in the College Station Cemetery.

Americanism Committee chairman Sherron Kornegay reported on the mock election in the 7th and 8th grades in Montgomery.

Historic Preservation Committee chairman Nancy Tiner reported that when she was in Paris, France, recently she decorated the tomb of Lafayette and also the grave of Lt. Paul Swank, an American killed while helping the French resistance.


Miss Teen Brazos County

Single girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited to apply for the title of 2009 Miss Teen Brazos County. The winner will represent the area at the Miss Teen Texas Pageant to be held in San Antonio in March.

Miss Teen Texas receives a scholarship and prize package valued at more than $15,000 and the chance to represent Texas at the 2009 Miss Teen International Pageant.

Teen contestants will compete in personal interview, fitness wear, fun fashion wear and evening gown. There is no talent or swimsuit competition and no experience is necessary.
