Crestview Style Show
About 325 people attended a Style Show and Coffee sponsored by the Crestview Volunteers recently. Chaired by Debbie Gibson, the event at the First United Methodist Church in Bryan served as a fundraiser as well as for member recruitment.
The Crestview Volunteers provide special services and activities for residents at Crestview Retirement Community, including bingo, birthday parties, ceramics, a Christmas wassail party, welcome baskets and Easter and Christmas remembrances.
The Style Show featured fall fashions from Morgan Fitzgerald's. Store owner Nancy Pride presented nine Crestview Volunteers as models.
Marsha Ross, manager of the Crestview Volunteers Gift Shop, created the table decorations featuring items from the gift shop.
Residents of Crestview who are in the Red Hat Society were special guests, along with activity director Alice Mendez, administrative assistant Linda Bates and social worker Laura Baker. Donna Jones, president of the Crestview Volunteers, presided.
The volunteers meet the third Wednesday in January, March, May, September and November. Membership is open to all. For more information, call Crestview at 776-4778.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Fox Sports Southwest was recently in Navasota to film the high school football game against Bryan's Rudder High as the DQ Game of the Week. The production started at Dairy Queen, moved to a pre-game pep rally and then went on to the game.
PLANT SALE
On a recent beautiful fall day, gardeners shop at the Brazos County Master Gardener Plant Sale, held in the Demonstration Idea Garden at the Brazos County office of Texas AgriLife Extension in Bryan. Proceeds from the sale support community education efforts by the group, a volunteer program of Texas AgriLife Extension.
NAVASOTA
* The Navasota City Council recently issued proclamations recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the week of Oct. 4-10 as Fire Prevention Week.
* The city of Navasota will soon be considering appointments for openings on various boards and commissions, including Planning and Zoning commission, Parks Advisory Board, Board of Adjustments, and the Library Board.
These committees are important to the city. They have specific areas of interest and assist City Council members with ideas to improve and enhance the services provided to residents and to encourage growth within Navasota.
On Oct. 26, the City Council will act to appoint new members to fill expired terms on these committees.
If you are interested in volunteering your time and talents to serve on a board or an advisory committee, please stop by City Hall, at 202 E. Washington St., and complete a volunteer application. Application materials can be found online at www.NavasotaTX.gov.
HIGHER EDUCATION
* Robert David Eller II of Bryan received a bachelor of science in maritime administration with a minor in economics from Texas A&M at Galveston during August commencement ceremonies.
* Alicia C.B. Allen, daughter of Sue Bloomfield and Willie Allen, both of College Station, was awarded a Fulbright Graduate Fellowship to teach conversational English to middle school students in South Korea. She is posted on the island of Jeju-Do until June.
Allen is a 2005 graduate of A&M Consolidated High School and graduated from Rice University in May with degrees in bioengineering and French.
SCHOOL NEWS
* Three students at Brazos Christian School -- Alan Coats, John Gustafson and Katie Shaub -- have been named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to principal Keith A. Currivean.
A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation will be presented to the seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
* Four students in the Franklin district received statewide recognition in the 2009 State Fair of Texas Creative Arts Competition: sixth-grader Emma Grace Wilson was awarded first place in the children's sculpture division; second-grader Abby Schlieker won second place in the children's textiles division with her batik; fourth-grade student Brandon Eppers placed fourth among 9-year-olds in the art division; and sixth-grader Shasta Blackerby received fourth place in the 11-year-old art division.
Emma's parents are Shelley and Trent Wilson. Abby's parents are Keith and Angela Schlieker. Brandon is the son of Holly Elliott, and Shasta is the daughter of Ronald Blackerby.
The students' work is on display at the Creative Arts Building during the State Fair in Dallas through Oct. 18.
* College Station native Casey Grice has been named an HP Scholastic Junior All-American. The 2009 team consists of 12 young men and 12 young women who excel both on the golf course and in the classroom.
To be eligible, boys must have placed in the top 10 of an AJGA Open or Invitational, while girls needed a top-five finish. Selections were then based on grade point average, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, leadership skills, community service and writing ability. Candidates were required to submit an essay on an original topic relating to golf.
Grice is a senior at A&M Consolidated High School and has a 4.2861 GPA (on a 4.0 scale), which is 24th in her class of 659 students.
She is an active leader in the community, was elected to the United Way Youth Leadership Cabinet and has helped raise more than $15,000 for the United Way of the Brazos Valley.
On the golf course, Grice won the 2009 Colorado Junior at Flying Horse and carded a 15th-place finish at the 2009 Laredo Energy Junior at Traditions, played at The Traditions Club at Texas A&M.
AREA AGENCY ON AGING
Oct. 4-10 was Resident's Rights Week for those living in nursing homes, sub-acute facilities, assisted living facilities and retirement homes.
Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging would like to recognize the following volunteer ombudsmen for their work on behalf of nursing home and assisted-living residents: Louise Bullock, Shirely Carter, Rick Dysart, Beulah Fordham, Ray George, Rene Harris, Shirley Jones, Sunny Keelan, George Latimer, Nevi Lee Lauter, Pamela Lyerly, Rosie Martino, Bessie Mason, Joyce O'Neil, Linda Parker, Lanelle Phillips, Lacey Price, Tameika Ray, Jane Rouse, Donna Seelig, Mae Simpson, Bobbie Souther, Sissy Ward, Gracie Wells and Cathy David.
SERVICE AWARD
B-CS resident Henry Clark has been awarded Gulf Swimming's 2009 ConocoPhillips Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes volunteers for their invaluable contribution to swimming.
Clark has been the technical planning chairman for Gulf Swimming for the past three years and has volunteered many hours for the benefit of the swimming community.
As of Jan. 1, Clark will begin his term as general cchair of Gulf Swimming, where he will continue to lead the organization.
In addition to his volunteer efforts Henry is the senior level coach for the Aggie Swim Club in Bryan-College Station as well as the club's treasurer and lead meet director.
Clark has a doctorate in nuclear physics and has been employed by Texas A&M University's Cyclotron Institute for more than 16 years.
Two-time Olympian and World Record Holder Margaret Hoelzer presented him with the award during a recent banquet in Houston.
JEFFERSON-JACKSON DAY BANQUET
It was standing room only at Briarcrest Country Club in Bryan last Sunday when Jim Hightower, former Texas Agriculture Commissioner and author, spoke to area Democrats. In attendance were Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate John Sharp and Houston Mayor Bill White; gubernatorial hopefuls Hank Gilbert and Felix Alvarado; railroad commissioner candidate Jeff Weems and land commissioner candidate Bill Burton.
