Our Neighbors

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

National Night Out 2009 was a great success in Navasota, with nine block parties and an estimated 200-plus neighbors coming together. Navasota Police officers visited each of the parties to provide information on identity theft and ways that neighbors can help each other fight crime.

THE WOMAN'S CLUB

Doug Welsh, professor and horticulturist for Texas AgriLife Extension Service, was the guest speaker at the Oct. 14 meeting of The Woman's Club.

Welsh is a familiar name to many members because of his KAMU-FM radio show Garden Success, his Friday appearances on KBTX's Brazos Valley This Morning program, and his book Doug Welsh's Texas Garden Almanac.

"The Top 10 Mistakes of Gardeners and Yardeners" was the title of Welsh's educational presentation. He discussed the No. 1 mistake we all make, which is over-watering, and suggested that we only water every 7 to 10 days.

Other common mistakes he discussed included using plants that are poorly adapted to our area, overfertilizing, misusing pesticides, improperly identifying a plant problem and planting in the wrong place or at the wrong time.

Welsh also gave helpful advice on preparing soil before planting and on the importance of mulch. His final words of advice were to think longterm.

After the presentation, Welsh answered questions and signed copies of his book.

New members to The Woman's Club received the other members and Shirley McShan served as Head Hostess for the day. She and her committee served tea and coffee, and members sampled Butter Braids that were to be sold by the Community Service Committee to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity in partnership with the Circle of Women's Build Project.

HOSPICE BRAZOS VALLEY

REAPPOINTMENT

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission recently announced the reappointment of Larry G. Holt of College Station to its governing board. Gov. Rick Perry has reappointed him to a six-year term, to expire Sept. 28, 2015.
