A $1,000 check was presented by Judy McCoy, the group's newly elected president, to Sarah Hannah, who grew up in Brazos Valley and has recently been elected to serve as the Texas Young Democrats National Committeewoman to Young Democrats of America.
The funds were provided to help Hannah with travel expenses when she attends quarterly meetings of the Young Democrats of America.

VETERANS DAY

CHARITY
Cliff Latham, who leads the College Station Adventure Boot Camp, which is ranked as the No. 5 Boot Camp in America, decided last month to conduct a "Squat for Cancer Fundraiser" for American Cancer Society in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"I decided that instead of just making a donation on behalf of our many Boot Camp survivors, that we would all squat for the cause and have a little fun and fitness with it," he said. "For every squat that we did on October 30, $.01 is going to be donated to our local chapter of the American Cancer Society."
Latham, an exercise physiologist and the owner of Fitness Together Training Studio, the Adventure Boot Camp and Elements Therapeutic Massage, thought it would be a fun way to help the cause, especially since many of the Boot Camp participants are breast cancer survivors.
The group presented a check for $164 for more than 16,400 squats that were completed to Trixy Roy, a local American Cancer Society representative during a Boot Camp awards ceremony. Several of the boot camp athletes made donations as well.

DISTINGUISHED YOUTH OF TEXAS
Raylee Ezzell of Wheelock and Katelin Rice of College Station have been accepted into the Distinguished Youth of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Program.
Ezzell is a student at Roland Reynolds Elementary School in Franklin and the daughter of Chad and Ondria Ezzell.
Rice is the daughter of Glenn and Catherine Rice. She is a sixth grader at Cypress Grove Intermediate School in College Station.
The program will be held this week in San Antonio.
During the competition, two students will be chosen to receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond and the right to serve as a state program titleholder for one year. In all, more than $5,000 in awards and prizes will be presented to various participants. The Distinguished Youth Program is destined to recognize girls in grades 2-7 who rank high academically and are leaders in their schools and communities. The judging criteria used to select the two state titleholders includes the following: scholastic record, service to school and community, personality projection and interview.
The program finals will be held Sunday Nov. 29 at the hotel and will culminate in the naming of the new Little Miss Texas and the new Young Miss of Texas.
THE WOMAN'S CLUB
During the Nov. 11 meeting, Leader of the Day Debra Howard introduced Woman's Club members to Dale E. Bush.
Bush has a master's degree in veterinary medical services from Texas A&M University, is owner of LGL Animal Care Products Inc. in College Station and serves as president of the board of directors of the Birddog Foundation.
Bush gave an interesting presentation on "Birds and Birddogs" to the members. He spoke about the 106-year-old National Birddog Championships held at the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tenn., where he has had two national championship winners and now serves as a judge during the annual three-week competition.
Bush also told members about Birdathons, The National Audubon Society's largest annual fundraising event and the world's largest bird-watching competition. Every year, thousands of people participate in this event to count birds, have fun and raise money for Audubon's mission of environmental conservation, education and advocacy. Participants count birds and collect pledges from sponsors based on the number of species they see in a 12-hour period.
After the program, special birding journals with examples of birds to identify were available. Members visited with Bush and his wife, Cathy, and looked at some of the birds from his mounted collection.
Head Hostess Peggy Hollingsworth and her committee served tea and coffee. Also at the meeting, Community Service co-chairs Diane Chester and Kay Gritter collected supplies and monetary donations for the Boys and Girls Club of the Brazos Valley.
BETA SIGMA PHI
The Texas Laureate Alpha Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its 43rd meeting last week in the home of Betty Williams.
Several service projects were discussed.
Mary Dudek is still collecting socks for the residents at Sherwood Nursing Home. Mary Ann Gaylord is still collecting the pink caps from Yoplait yogurt and will send them in for donations to help fight breast cancer.
Marcia Drost reported that one box has been sent to Iraq for U.S. solders there. The chapter will send more boxes, and Drost and her husband, Gary, will collect the items.
Sandra Wood and Dudek are to schedule a time to make a donation of several boxes of snowmen to Scotty's House.
The chapter held two Ways and Means projects this month: selling Rada knives and a garage sale at Gaylord's home. Both projects were successful.
The chapter is planning a progressive dinner for its Christmas party. First will be Gaylord's home, where members will have an ornament exchange. The main course will be served at Kathy Pilgrim's home, and secret sister gifts will be exchanged. The final course, dessert, will be held at Janet Wood's home, and members will participate in a cookie exchange.
