St. Michael's Academy in Bryan placed first at the recent TAPPS District 5A Academic Meet. Students scored 69 points over the second-place finisher.
Winners were: Gabriel Carrasco, first in Spanish; Kevin Fox, fourth in current events and issues and sixth in social studies; Braden Gammon, first in number sense and third in ready writing; Copeland Gammon, second in literary criticism and in spelling; Grace Hansen, first in literary criticism and second in current events and issues; Josh Horner, first in biology and in physics, second in science and in calculator math, third in poetry interpretation; James Hu, fourth in mathematics; Pyong-Hwa Kim, first in computer science and in calculator math; Yi Liu, third in advanced math; Tommy Osborn, third in calculator math, fifth in number sense and sixth in Spanish; J.T. A&M CONSOLIDATED HIGH SCHOOL

BETA SIGMA PHI
* The Texas Laureate Alpha Alpha Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its 49th meeting at Sherry Kovar's home last month.
Members enjoyed a meal prepared by the Food Committee of Sandra Wood, Rosemary Shaunfield, Teresa Chipman and Margie Thielen in honor of Valentine Sweetheat Mary Ann Gaylord. After the meal, the regular meeting was held.
Members are saving coupons to send to military families. Mary Dudek is still collecting the fronts of Christmas cards to be given to the Children's Museum. Dudek is also purchasing construction paper and other craft supplies to donate to the museum. Kathy Pilgrim reported that she had a lot of craft items she could donate.
Members were reminded that the Founder's Day Banquet will be held April 29. The Preferential Tea will be held Sunday at the home of Irene Chambers.
* The Gamma Gamma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at Fish Daddy's recently for a birthday luncheon. The birthday honorees were Jo Colby, Faye Caldwell and Kay Hamn. The women received secret sister gifts and cards from all the members.
President Hamn led a brief business meeting. Vice president Diana Kratchman reported that the Spring Tea honoring all B-CS pledges would be held Sunday at the home of Irene Chambers.
CLUB NEWS
* Julia Beazer, regent of Bryan's William Scott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, presented American flags that had flown over the nation's Capitol to Larry Koeniger of the Clara B. Mounce Public Library in Bryan and Nan Ross of the Carnegie History Center. Anna Kellett, president of the Robert Henry Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, presented Texas flags that had flown over the State Capitol to Koeniger and Ross.
Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee and Mayor Protem Jason Bienski provided poles and bases.
* The Aggieland International Association of Administrative Professionals chapter has elected the following officers: Sheila Dotson, CPS/CAP president; Mary Ellen Rowan, CAP president-elect; Lisa Benavides, CPS/CAP vice president; Lea Ann Westmoreland, CAP treasurer; and Tammy Prater, CPS/CAP secretary.

BRYAN
Bryan resident Hilda P. Cuthbertson was among 30 court administrators, clerks, managers and supervisors from municipal courts across Texas who graduated Feb. 5 from the Court Management Program of the Institute for Court Management. She was recognized as a Certified Court Manager. Cuthbertson is employed as the court administrator with the Bryan Municipal Court.
BRYAN SCHOOLS
* Bryan High School band students participated in the recent UIL Solo and Ensemble competition.
The following soloists earned a Superior Rating in Class 1 and qualified for state: freshman Rachel Miller on french horn; sophomores Tristan Mirand-Sohrabji on baritone saxiphone and Samuel Ely on marimba; juniors Kristyn Stevener on flute, Catherine Miller on oboe, Nathan Kerr on tuba, Austin Valadez on marimba and Mason Voskamp on marimba; and senior Anne Wunneburger on french horn. The brass quientet ensemble of sophomore Servando Salinas; juniors Joseph Haven and Kerr; and seniors Steven Hering and Wunneburger also earned a Superior Rating in Class 1 and qualified for state. Students advance to the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest by earning a Superior Rating on a Class 1 piece which has been memorized.
The following soloists earned a Superior Rating in Class 1: freshmen Zachary Spicker on flute, Abigail Wunneburger on euphonium and Jordan Pankratz on snare drum; sophomores Morgan Gates on bassoon, Molly Wise on clarinet, Joseph Heritage on bass clarinet and Denzel Brown on tenor saxophone; juniors Jarod Tobias on clarinet, Stephen Buchly on trumpet and Jared Overton on timpani; and seniors Manuel Arias on clarinet and Hering on trumpet.
The following soloists earned a Superior Rating in Class 2: freshmen Carina Trejo on flute, Eric Sierra on snare drum and Lukas Merchant on snare drum; sophomores Ashley Harris on flute, Sarah Thompson on oboe and Ryan Hall on snare drum; and seniors Clarissa Rodriguez on flute and Hope Milholland on clarinet.
Freshman Kaitlyn Martin earned a Superior Rating in Class 3 on clarinet.
* Bryan High School orchestra violinist Rachel Warden, a freshman, earned a top rating at the recent regional Solo and Ensemble event and a spot in the state competition.
* Eight Media Technology students earned trips to the Skills USA State Competition after the recent district meet in Beaumont.
Four teams of two students each competed in the Television Production contest. The students were given a theme of "Recycling at Lamar University: Let's Make the Red and White a Greener Place." They had two hours to shoot footage and two hours to edit a one-minute video. The competion included teams from A&M Consolidated and West Orange-Stark.
The team of Matt Kornegay and Shawn Sanders placed second out of 11 to qualify for the state competition. The team of Cassey Eastep and Ashley Wheeler finished third and will compete in the technical test at state.
Additionally, four video projects submitted by the students also earned Superior ratings and will advance. The student producers of the projects were: Kornegay, Seth Allen, Eastep, Wheeler, Daniel Manthei and Gaudencio Sanchez.
The state meet will be March 25-27.
BRIDGE CLUB

AWARDS
The Private Schools Interscholastic Association District 3A Academic Meet was held recently at Immanuel Lutheran School in Giddings. Bryan residents and home-educated brothers Nathan, Benjamin and Samuel Seago competed in a combined eight events.
Samuel, a second-grader in his first year of PSIA competition, was recognized for participating in second-grade spelling.
Benjamin, a fifth-grader, placed third in fifth-grade dictionary skills and fifth in combined grades dictionary skills.
Nathan, an eighth grader, won first place in each of his four events: calculator applications; dictionary skills; maps, graphs and charts; and science. He advances to the state competition, to be held May 1 in Fort Worth.
Eight private schools and three home schools participated in the 3A District Meet in Giddings. PSIA is an extracurricular academic program for private and home schools offering challenging academic competition in a format similar to that of the UIL.
NEEDS A HOME
Mac is an adult Lhasa Apso, about 3 years old. He loves to play and is a total lap dog -- he loves attention. He is leash-trained and seems to be potty trained as well. Mac is missing an eye but it doesn't slow him down.
