MILITARY
Army 2nd Lt. Matt Hester of Bryan recently received the Expert Field Medic Badge at Fort Hood in Killeen after two weeks of training and testing.
Hester is the platoon leader for a medical services platoon within the 1st Batallion, 21st Field Artillery Regiment, 41st Fires Brigade stationed at Fort Hood.
The Army recognized only one participant for each honor during the awards ceremony. Hester tied for the highest overall score for the event and had the highest score on the written exam (54 out of 60 points). He also came in second in the 12-mile rucksack march, eight minutes ahead of the cutoff time.
Army officials said the extreme heat made the physical challenges even more difficult. The Killeen Daily Herald reported that of the 241 who tried to earn the elite badge, just 18 sucessfully completed the written and physical tests.
Hester is a 2005 graduate of Bryan High School, a 2009 graduate of Texas A&M University, and the son of Connie and George Hester of Bryan.
