Ten-year-old Andrew Tharp attended the Lone Star Leadership Academy last month.
He was selected to attend based on his "outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability and recommendation by his teacher," according to Education in Action, which sponsors the academy.
The camp, held July 21 to 25, taught students leadership skills and Texas culture.
Students visited Dallas-Fort Worth sites including the Texas Civil War Museum, the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Dallas Aquarium.
Tharp will attend sixth grade at Davila Middle School this year.
Three A&M Consolidated High School seniors received scholarships this summer from the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.
Andrew Tyler Keating received $14,000 payable over four years. The Welch Foundation awarded 20 scholarsihps to students who have participated in teh UIL Academic State Meet and plan to major in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical enginnering. Keating plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and study chemical engineering.
Elizabeth Ann Blomstedt received a $2,500 scholarship for her first year at The University of Texas. She plans to study English. The Harold Lawrence Memorial awarded 21 grants to students this year.
Taylor Marie Jackson received a Lola Wright Foundation Scholarship of $1,000 for her first year at The University of Texas, where she plans to study journalism. She is one of eight who received a scholarship from the foundation this year.
Three area graduates received CONNECTS scholarships from the Texas A&M University Dwight Look College of Engineering.
Amanda Joy Camarata of Mumford High School, Isaac Benjamin Michael of Franklin High and Jared Heath Winstead of Leon High School received prestigious scholarships through the National Science Foundation and its Scholarships for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program.
The students will also have the opportunity to live in the Engineering Living Learning Community at Texas A&M this fall.
