FEMA hosts seminars to foster partnerships

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is hosting a series of workshops to teach area companies how to do business with the federal government in recovery efforts for Hurricane Ike.

Area businesses are vital to the rebuilding of local economies, FEMA officials said, and the agency has a policy to encourage local business relationships.

The seminars will provide information on varying phases of the procurement process to foster participation in the recovery efforts.

Seminars are scheduled in Houston, Texas City, Port Arthur, Lake Jackson, La Porte, Lufkin and San Antonio. For more information and a list of upcoming seminar dates and locations, e-mail FEMA-Industry@dhs.gov.

CS airport extends ad campaign venture

Easterwood Airport has extended its contract with Clear Channel Interspace Advertising to create a "Community Showcase" advertising program for area businesses.

The advertising campaign is intended to highlight the businesses and attractions of the region, Easterwood officials said, and serve as a welcome for visitors to the community and Texas A&M University.

The campaign will include wall murals, digital LCD displays, a scrolling weather display and a comprehensive reservation station that will allow phone access to local businesses, airport officials said.

The campaign offers local and regional businesses the opportunity to reach more than 128,000 passengers who use the airport each year, officials said.

Comptroller's Office to offer tax workshops

The Texas Comptroller's Office will offer a free seminar to help local residents with their state taxes next week.

The seminar will take place Oct. 16 at the Brazos Valley Small Business Development Center, 4001 E. 29th St., Suite 175, in Bryan from 6 to 8 p.m.

"Operating a business has many challenges, but figuring out your taxes should not be one of them," Comptroller Susan Combs said. "Whether you are a new taxpayer or one who has been in business for many years, this seminar will help you understand the laws that apply to you and your business."

The seminar will cover sales tax forms, taxability issues, taxpayer responsibilities and the services and information available from the Comptroller's Office to assist taxpayers. Comptroller representatives will answer questions and provide assistance to attendees.

For more information, call the Comptroller's Bryan office at 776-5200.

Those who are unable to attend the seminar can call the Comptroller's tax assistance line at 800-252-5555. Tax forms and tax information can also be found on the Comptroller's Web site, www.window.state.tx.us.

Real estate company discounts prices

The Bryan-College Station Coldwell Banker United real estate office will participate in a national initiative designed to jump-start the U.S. housing market, company officials announced this week.

On Friday, the company will begin its first "10-Day Sales Event," during which home sellers will reduce the price of their homes by 5 percent. The event runs through Oct. 19.
