A football player for the San Francisco 49ers was arrested recently after a traffic stop in his hometown of Brenham.
Officials said Roderick Green, 26, was pulled over for speeding and became uncooperative with a Washington County sheriff's deputy.
Green was charged with reckless driving, unlawfully carrying a weapon, possession of marijuana and interfering with the duties of a police officer, said Janie Hart, a Washington County Sheriff's Office patrol clerk.
Green -- a San Jose, Calif., resident who plays linebacker for the 49ers -- graduated from Brenham High School, where he played football and basketball and was in all-conference choir his senior year. He went on to earn a degree from Central Missouri University after attending Blinn College for two years and earning All-American and All-Conference honors.
He is a free agent for the 49ers and has played with the team since 2006. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2004.
Hart said a sheriff's deputy stopped Green's vehicle on F.M. 577 around 9:49 p.m. Feb. 2. Green was driving 76 mph in a 50 mph zone, the deputy said.
Because of the amount of traffic on F.M. 577, the deputy approached the passenger side of Green's truck, Hart said. The passenger window was cracked, and the deputy knocked on the window for the driver to roll it all the way down, Hart said.
"Instead of rolling it down, they rolled it up," Hart said, adding that the music in the truck was loud.
"Once she was able to get them to roll the window down, she could smell an odor of marijuana," Hart said.
During a search of Green and his truck, the deputy found less than 2 ounces of marijuana and a gun, Hart said.
Hart did not know what kind of gun it was, and officials could not confirm that it belonged to Green, but he was arrested on the weapons charge because it was in his vehicle. He was charged with interfering with the duties of a police officer because he rolled the window up when he was asked to roll it down, Hart said.
Green was released from jail Feb. 3 on a personal recognizance bond, County Attorney Julie Renken said.
The case was forwarded to the County Attorney's Office on Tuesday, Renken said.
"He is scheduled to come to court on April 29," she said. "So he has not entered a plea or had any hearings yet."
Renken said she had not received any indication that Green had an attorney working on the case yet.
Unlawfully carrying a weapon is a class A misdemeanor charge with a maximum punishment of a year behind bars and a $4,000 fine.
The other three offenses Green is charged with are class B misdemeanors, each punishable by up to a $2,000 fine and 180 days in jail.
Hart said Green had two passengers in the truck, but neither was arrested.
In 2006, Green was stabbed after a fight broke out at a Baltimore bowling alley. According to media reports at the time, the fight began after Green bumped into another bowler at the alley. Green tried to leave, but the man followed him into the parking lot and stabbed him, according to reports. The man was later arrested and charged with attempted murder.
In 2008, Green played in 13 games with the 49ers and recorded 31/2 sacks and seven tackles.
