U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is hitting Texas Gov. Rick Perry on his home turf: Aggieland.
The candidate’s campaign released a list of more than 60 prominent Aggies — and one former U.S. senator — who are supporting Hutchison in the Republican primary scheduled for March.
So what would compel loyal Aggies to support a former University of Texas at Austin cheerleader over a former Texas A&M yell leader?
For Jon Hagler, one of the Aggies on the list, it’s the “politicization” of the university under the tenure of Perry, who some say has a more-than-healthy interest in his alma mater’s decisions.
“There are only two things motivating me to get involved in this race,” said Hagler, who has donated more than $10 million to the university. “The first is my belief in education, and the second is my love for my university.”
The list also includes George P. Mitchell, who officials say has donated in the range of $55 million to the university over the years; several Aggies who have campus buildings named after them such as Artie McFerrin, Jerry Cox and Hagler; and former U.S. Sen. Phil Gramm.
Gramm, now an executive at Swiss bank UBS, is the only supporter on the list who isn’t a former student, but he was an economics professor at Texas A&M before his Congressional career.
