A/C problem fixed at Bryan prison

About 400 inmates at the federal prison camp in Bryan sweated through 100-degree weather without air-conditioning this weekend, officials said.

The system was repaired by Monday morning, according to Barbara Von Blanckensee, associate warden and spokeswoman for the Bryan facility.

Von Blanckensee said the air-conditioning broke in one of the prison's two housing units on Thursday. Officials ordered replacement parts and worked through the weekend to repair it, she said.

The minimum-security prison houses about 900 women, and 141 staff members work at the prison on Ursuline Avenue, she said.

She said it's rare for the air-conditioning units to stop working, but fans were brought in. No health problems were reported and few complaints were lodged.

But San Angelo resident Vera Chapman said that didn't keep those housed there completely happy.

Chapman, whose granddaughter is an inmate at the Bryan unit, said she got a call over the weekend from her granddaughter.

"She was very, very uncomfortable," she said. "I realize it's not a luxury hotel, and it's not supposed to be."

Chapman said her granddaughter told her some inmates agreed to call as many of their friends and relatives as possible to try to get someone to help get the air-conditioning fixed.

Comment Title: Alot more than a broken AC
i have a friend that is in this prison and the AC was broken for about 6 days and the inmates who told their families to complain were put in the "hole" to teach them a lesson for telling. There were women about to pass out from the heat and they didn't even care. On top of that... some of the water fountains in the units don't even work and the ones that do spit out hot water. How are these people suppose to stay hydrated when its 100 degrees outside? Some of the women were sleeping on the concrete floors because it was so hot. And then there's the bugs in the cereal. They are given cereal for breakfast that has bugs in it. The cooks are told to pick the bugs out and serve the cereal as is. To be a federeal prison camp these women are being mistreated and the guards and workers could care less. Who do they have to tell to make a change.

Comment Title: Reply to Bad Choices
For those who are unaware, the Federal Prison Camp for women in Bryan is a "Prison Camp." As a result, there are not supposed to be voilent offenders there. Bad Choices, rest assured there should not be any rapists or murders there. At the same time, don't depend upon the FBOP to be competent. With that said, yes, there are women there who are thieves, embezellers, and druggies. There are many people like myself, who do not condone the acts of our loved ones who are there. I destest the fact that my spouse did what she did. She was consumed by something she allowed to happen. What she did train-wrecked our family. I had two choices. I could have followed the advice of many people who said to dump her. It would have certainly been easier. But I choose not to do that and try to stand by the vow I made to stand by her through the bad times as well as the good. I will endure her time as if I am serving it myself. After all, the consequences of her actions are clear and determined by an the U.S. District Court. It is what it is. What I and many other people are trying so say is that consequences of lawlessness is being served by these ladies in Bryan. We don't dispute that reality. But, the conditions are at issue nothing else. Again, how would you feel if your wife, mom, or sister had to endure conditions such as this? If you can't figure that out, you need to take a long hard look at your self and hope that you are not the one suffering someday. For all of you who do have someone there, you know what I am saying. You have been there. You have seen the disparitiy in treatment by the guards right in front to your eyes in the visitation area. You have witnessed the removal of tables, and how the guards tell families, in a distrpectful tone, to make sure the kids don't spill anything. In the family area outside, the playground equipment has been taken away, which was a good source of occupation for kids. But now the equipment is gone, yet the guards assert that the kids are to be quiet and restrained. Look up the mission and vision statement of the FBOP on the Internet. Do you see the mission and vision statement in practice? Why keep women there who are eligible for halfway house placement but are still there? The problematic inmates are moved out asap. But inmates who do what they are supposed to do and are not a problem and thus easy to manage are still there. Federal legislation signed last year entitled "The Second Chance Act" calls for non-violent, first-time offenders to get a year off their sentence. In the name of cost saving measures in the form of tax dallors, why are these people still there when they could be out, working, paying taxes, and resitution in some cases? I think that there needs to be an investigation into the system by someone else other than the FBOP.

Comment Title: Bad choices
So you are saying if I, as a person with no criminal history, make a "bad choice" to rape your daughter, kill your mother, steal from your church or business that causes it to fail and never pay back the theft, you are going to push for prisoner rights and stand up for me? Where do I sign up for this? (in this life)

Comment Title: Compassion
I too thank You "a man who cares." I have a daughter that made a mistake that cost her. She too is one of the one's suffering in the heat. The prison states no one has passed out...that is not true. Illegals and animals receive better treatment in our country than these ladies who are human and "United States Citizens" even though they have made mistakes. I am grateful there are so many perfect families out there even though the Bible tells us non are perfect except JESUS CHRIST himself. I hope all of you who are so judgemental never have a loved one make a mistake large enough to land them in prison for it is involves the whole family in the pain and hurt it causes and I don't wish that on anyone. (Remember: Judge not least ye be judged Jesus said.) I think the Federal Prison needs to do their jobs yes but I also believe you should have compassion for those you oversee.

Comment Title: Love thy neighbor
Thank you "A Man of Cares". Finally someone who is intelligent, compassionate, knows the facts and can spell! I have a niece in the Bryan FPC. I have been reading these comments for days. And it was very clear many of these people don't have a clue about what they are talking about. I wish they could go to one visitation at the camp and see these women. Better yet, see these families. I've been amazed at the people that obviously are perfect and must have perfect lives, perfect families and perfect friends. These women in these camps are loved and those people who love them suffer when they suffer. Just like those of you have people in your lives you love and you suffer when they suffer. The suffering is the same for all of us. So please have some compassion, if not for the inmates, for the families who love them. Eight times in the bible we are told to love our neighbor, I think he meant it!

Comment Title: To those who think the women at the FPC deserve to suffer
It amazes me as to how many people in the world there are without any skeletons in their closet. I am the spouse of a woman who made a terrible mistake, and now she is paying for her mistake in federal prison. She has lost everything, but she doesn't deserve to be treated like an animal. Zoo animals are often treated better than these women at the Bryan FPC. First of all, the report that tha AC was out for only a couple of days is not true. Lets try for a week. The work on the AC didn't even begin until Monday after it had been out for a week. The AC is allegedly fixed. According to the FPC "fixed" means the air is flowing but not necessarily cool. It costs a great deal of money to cool large builings, and the administration has seen to it that expenses are cut by keeping the AC units set a high temperature. But rest assured that all of the offices are cool and cozy. Drive by sometime and ask yourself why the staff there wear jackets in the Texas summer heat. Secondly, the ice machines don't work, so they couldn't even get relief with a cool drink of water. The ice machines still don't work, and inmates have to stand in line for a very long time to get a cup of ice, which melts within minutes in 100 degree heat. Lastly, they can't even take showers on a regular basis because the facility is rationing water to save money. How would you feel if you had to survive in 100 degree heat, drink luke warm water, and not be able to shower on a regular basis? If the Feds don't want to care for these people in a humane way, then they should follow federal legislation and get those who are eligible on the road to a halfway house. Many people may not care what happens to these unfortunate people. The sad thing is that the FPC is a closed system as far as information. The public will only hear what the administration wants the public to hear. The administration will deny any inhumane treatment because they can. The unfortunate women at the FPC have no voice or advocate. After all, they are criminals. Think about it. What if it was your loved one there. How would you feel. Remember, we are all one mistake away from ruining our lives, and some people have already made the mistake and just not been caught yet.

It is obvious you are not inmates at the prison. Internet access is one thing they thankfully do not give criminals. Do you have family and friends in the prison system? You must or you are complete left wing liberrals. People have existed in prison for thousands of years without TV, air conditioning, excercise yards, visits from family etc. In fact, that is the way it is presently in prisons all over the world including your precious Mexico, Middle East, Asia, Africa and some parts of Europe. Why do the prisoners in Bryan, TX or anywhere in the USA deserve to live like Kings? (compared to average Citizens in other countries)They dont. Get off your liberal high horse and jump on Pelosi's private jet and tour other countries before you spend billions of OUR tax money coddling common criminals. Prison is a punishment, not a "time out to think about what you did" Embezzling, check fraud, theft, drug dealing are not "mistakes" these people thought out their crimes, not stumbled into them. Now STFU!

First of all I am not an inmate!! Don't even live in Texas. But I do know about Bryan Prison. And there aren't molesters there and no I don't think a 3yr old is at fault. But people who buy drugs are no better than the ones selling and no one makes you buy them. The point of me making comments is that you make these cruel comments about people you don't even know. You don't know why they are there or what it's like for them. No one desereves to not have A/C isn't that the point of this article!?? Lets get real here. Most of the inmates there do 5yrs. It's a low security to help people rehebilitate. Not make them feel like they aren't worthy.

You people are really ignorant. Those inmates at Bryan can not be 2nd offenders it's a camp! Get your facts straight. And no one should be without A/C in 100 degree weather prison or no prison. And the states help those people that don't have A/C get it. Also they are given fans. But not the inmates. And another thing they all work inside there and get paid $15-$20 per month. To buy personnal items, use the phone, paper, and ect. As you can see the money doesn't last long. They don't deserve your cruel comments. And as far as drug addicts they can change and become better citezens. They can get clean and stay clean. And anyone who sold dope no one made your children buy it. Everyone deserves to be treated like human beings. Last time I checked this is United States of America. They deserve better than what they are given there. And the windows do not open to those who think they do. And the doors can't even be open for air flow. Equal rights and fair treatments should be given to all.

Actually I have to say my information is dead on correct concerning many correctional facilities. They are not air conditioned. And the windows will not crank shut since the offenders use them to chin up while walking down the block to turn out. Then they steal the tools used to crank the windows open and make weapons out of them. As for the bills that stack up? Are you kidding me? I know who is supporting all of their children! I am and so is every other over worked tax-payer in this country. Because they are living off of the system while the deadbeat parent is living off of the state. There is no check and balance here when it comes to bills. The AG office is so overwhelmed with these poor misunderstood individuals that it takes years to catch up with all of the paperwork. In the meantime little Johnny has free lunch at school, and his family is getting part of my paycheck to support him. These addicts and alcoholics and sex offenders will not and can not change their lifesyles. So let's hope that they stay locked up since it guarantees job security for everyone in the judicial and law enforcement system.

I am so gratified that someone out there is agreeing with me. TDCJ is for security and safety and full of repeat offenders. Yes they are someone's family member but so what? If they were part of my family member I would say rot inside. We need zero tolerance! These offenders are treated better than you think. You have got to be kidding me. Who cares? They are criminals. Let them sweat. Maybe if they are "uncomfortable" they won't want to come back. TDCJ prisons aren't air-conditioned, and we sweat all day. Some of those buildings are like being in a pizza oven and the officers and offenders drop like flies. But that is part of the job. I try to be optimistic and say well I will keep drinking water and will lose those few extra pounds this summer. Maybe instead of cooling off the inmates we should give the officers a raise. It is not inhumane to sweat a little. If you can't do the time don't do the crime. A\C for criminals? What do they need it for. They are paying rent, electric bills or God forbid I should mention CHILD SUPPORT.
