A&M-Commerce president chosen

The Texas A&M System Board of Regents on Friday tapped a longtime academic administrator as the sole finalist to lead Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Dan Jones currently works at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, where he serves as provost and vice president for academic affairs, chief student affairs officer and English professor.

He is set to replace outgoing Keith McFarland, who will retire as president and CEO on July 31 after more than a decade in his post and 38 years with the university.

"Dr. Jones will bring considerable leadership experience in student and academic affairs to Texas A&M-Commerce," Board of Regents Chairman Bill Jones said in a statement released Friday afternoon. "Also, having worked in the A&M System for five years, he is familiar with our mission and vision."

Dan Jones previously worked

18 years in various administrative roles at the University of Houston-Downtown, as well as three years at Casper College in Wyoming.

Regents are required by state law to wait 21 days before formally hiring Jones. If he is appointed, he will be in charge of more than 1,000 employees and almost 9,000 students and will manage an annual budget of almost $100 million, A&M System officials said.

Regents did not name sole finalists in the search for presidents at Texas A&M University-Texarkana and Tarleton State University in Killeen.
