Awards recognize community service
Keep Brazos Beautiful handed out awards during a Mardi Gras-themed 25th anniversary celebration Friday night.
The organization has developed the Blanket the Brazos wildflower campaign. Through the campaign, organizers said, Keep Brazos Beautiful has distributed more than 6 tons of wildflower seeds at parks and along roads.
The nonprofit incorporation boasts that it has cleaned up more than 1,000 tons of litter, debris and abandoned tires in the community.
Keep Brazos Beautiful handed out 19 awards Friday night. The winners are:
Texas AgriLife Extension Service of Brazos County was given the Community Stewardship Award.
Distinguished Partners in Beauty Awards were given to the Brazos Valley Council of Governments, the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Management Agency, the Land Design Group and the Matthews Group.
Keepers of the Kingdom Awards were given to the Brazos County Road and Bridge Department, the city of Bryan's BEE Program and Randie the Raccoon.
Twin City Mission and Texas A&M's Environmental Issues Committee were given the "Can Do" Recycling Awards, and A&M's Big Event and St. Theresa Catholic Church's youth group won Miller Youth Awards.
The Amberlake HOA won a beautification award, Mary Marek won a good neighbor award and media awards were presented to The Eagle's managing editor, Kelly Brown, and Dough Welsh of KAMU-FM and KRHD-TV.
The Lady Bird Johnson Community Advocate Award was given to Dorothy Miller, who founded Keep Brazos Beautiful with J.C. Miller.
