Barbecue to help family of Navasota wreck victims

A benefit barbecue is set for Saturday for the family of two Navasota girls killed in an auto accident last week.

Plates of barbecue, sandwiches and baked goods will be sold beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Navasota High School parking lot to raise money for the family of Jessica Mattern, 16, and Sierra Simmons, 4.

The sisters died after the vehicle they were in rolled on F.M. 3090 on June 17. Three others injured in the accident have been released from the hospital.

Organizers of Saturday's benefit are looking for volunteers to deliver food and help at the event. Donations of food, such as cakes or other baked goods, are also being accepted. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call Scott Imhoff at 979-450-5795 or Ivannia Imhoff at 936-825-6581.

To place an order, call Patricia Daley at 936-419-1152.

Sandwiches will cost $5, and plates will cost $6. Donations also will be accepted.

"If you can come by and buy a sandwich, that'd be great," said Scott Imhoff. "If you can come by and volunteer for an hour and get someone else out of the sun, that'd be great, too."

The event will last until the food is gone, Imhoff said.

An account has been set up in Crystal Simmons' name at Guaranty Bank in Navasota to assist the family. For information about making a donation, call 936-825-7555.

Comment Title:
It's not cold at all, it's a legitimate question. People die every single day in the BCS! Yet you almost never hear of the family or the family's friends asking for money! Go ahead, look in the paper for the last year, count the obituaries, and then see how many of those families asked for money. Virtually none and I'd bet at least half of the people were not financially well-off. So, do you (below) KNOW that this family is completely broke, has no insurance, and that the funerals (which do not need to cost 10's of thousands of dollars) are the reason? or are you speculating?

Comment Title: What?
To the first comment, how could you ask such a cold question like that? If it is not blatantly obvious, this family and community just lost two wonderful children, and the funeral expenses are going to be in the tens of thousands for Crystal Mattern. Do you think she is going to go to Vegas? Buy a car? Can you honestly say you don't know why a benefit would be held for a mother who just lost her only two daughters?

What is the reason for the benefit? If the people holding this benefit want those of us who don't know this family to give them money, they should provide a reason. I know the two children were killed, what is the relationship between that tragedy and asking the public to give the family money?
