Burleson County Sheriff Dale Stroud said Monday that a 57-year-old man who died Monday in a vehicle-bicycle accident was well-known among Cooks Point residents and often rode his bicycle on Texas 21.
Donald Nelson, who Stroud said lived near Cooks Point, died Sunday night after he was struck by a vehicle just after 8 p.m. while riding on Texas 21 about five miles east of Caldwell.
"Everybody knew Donald," Stroud said. "He was a pretty well-known figure around here."
Department of Public Safety Corp. Jimmy Morgan said Nelson was stuck by a vehicle driven by 52-year-old John Evans of Lufkin.
Evans was westbound on Texas 21 in a four-door Chevrolet sedan when he struck Nelson, who was crossing the highway on his bike from F.M. 1362, officials said. Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Morgan said no citations had been issued Monday, although the accident remained under investigation.
Funeral services for Nelson were pending Monday with a Caldwell funeral home.
In an unrelated incident Monday morning, Bryan Officer Jason James said a 60-year-old man was struck by a vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot off Briarcrest Drive.
James said the Bryan resident was not injured and only asked to have his blood pressure checked when officers responded to the scene.
No citations were issued to the pedestrian or the driver.

57 is way too young to go, especially when you are still biking regularly. I'm sure he still had a lot to offer the world.

Some people are unintentionally insensitive and say things without thinking. I hope that was the case here. My condolences also.

I agree the rude comments should stop; however, I'm also sure any family member reading such comments know it is from the area's classless trash and pays no heed. Sympathies to the family of the deceased and to the driver.

God be with you Donald Nelson - and may the rude people who make horrible comments about people you don't even know - PLEASE stop! The family should not see that type of comment - some thoughts are better to be kept to yourself.
