A Blinn College administrator has joined the field of candidates who have announced their intentions to run for Bryan-College Station's District 14 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.
Blanche Brick, head of the junior college's Social Sciences Division and a history professor at the school, said she will seek the 500 signatures necessary to petition as a candidate for the seat.
Brick has taught at Blinn for 26 years. She touted her higher education experience as a key asset that she said would allow her to work for the district on issues such as education, transportation and law enforcement.
"I am running for this Texas House of Representatives seat not because I have all of the answers to these concerns, but I do feel that I can ask many of the questions we all have as these policies are addressed at the state level," she said.
The seat is currently held by Bryan businessman Fred Brown, who announced earlier this month that he planned to seek re-election. Former District Judge Rick Davis and retired Brazos County Tax Assessor-Collector Buddy Winn have also announced their candidacy.
The filing period for the race begins Dec. 3.
All four announced candidates are Republicans, which means they will go against each other in March.
Brick said she has been interested in politics for years and decided to make a run after Brown ran unopposed in the last three elections. But she said she didn't expect the race to be this crowded.
"I thought it would be good to run and bring in some discussion," she said. "But I didn't think there would be this much discussion."
