Call it a sweet deal.
Decorated cakes and pies, baked and donated by 4-H members and their families, will be up for bid Monday during the 37th annual 4-H Cake Show and Auction in the Bryan High School Silver Campus cafeteria.
The event, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., is the biggest 4-H fundraiser of the year, said Brandon Gregson, a spokesman for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Brazos County.
The money will be used for learning opportunities and to send young people in the program to leadership camps, he said.
Last year's auction raised $26,000, he said.
"The kids put a lot of effort into the cakes they make," he said.
At last year's event, Gregson said, somebody donated a cake that looked like a hamburger.
Check-in for cakes and pies will be from 5 to 5:45 p.m., and judging by community members will begin at 6 p.m.
In addition to the cake to be auctioned, two samples should be brought for the judging. Participants are asked to return to the cafeteria by 6:45 p.m. to carry their cakes as they are auctioned to the highest bidders.
This year is the centennial of Texas 4-H, and many of the cakes may be decorated to celebrate that event, Gregson said.
Cake categories include 4-H-themed cakes, decorated cakes, chocolate cakes, pound cakes and pies. There is also a men and boys division and a "good, old-fashion eating" category.
"I'm fascinated by them every year," Gregson said.
