Bryan trustees put discussion about requiring a standardized dress code back in the closet.
The school board on Monday officially decided against adopting one, saying trustees came to a consensus that standardizing the dress code wasn't necessary after talking to numerous principals.
Many school officials who were in favor of the idea in earlier months have since changed their mind and told board members that problems associated with the dress code aren't a big issue, said Board Secretary Doug Wunneburger.
"I think we just have a very good dress code," said Board President Pat Shields. "If you read what it says and everybody follows it, then we wouldn't have to have these discussions."
The district dress code now requires students to be "groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard." Graphics on clothing cannot be "lewd, offensive, vulgar or obscene," and cannot advertise illegal products, according to district policy.
Also during Monday's meeting, board members approved the 2011-12 school calendar.
Before seeking approval of a calendar, district officials allowed the community to take a survey indicating their choice over three calendars. The majority of those who responded, about 73 percent, favored the option board members approved, officials said.
Under the adopted calendar, students will begin school on Aug. 23 and end on May 19. Spring break will be during the same week as it is at Texas A&M, and the district will take Labor Day off. An earlier version of this story mistakenly reported that the first day of school would be Aug. 24.
