An admitted Bryan gang member was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday as part of a plea agreement for his role in a 2009 drive-by shooting.
Jerry Reyes Gomez, 24, was convicted of deadly conduct, evading arrest with a motor vehicle, engaging in organized criminal activity and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He will have to serve at least five years before he is eligible for parole.
"Regardless of whether he serves five years or the whole 15-year sentence, he's going to be spending some of the best years of his life in a prison cell," said Assistant District Attorney Cory Crenshaw. "I think we can all agree that that is hopefully going to be a pretty good deterrent for anyone thinking about joining a gang or committing a future crime."
He was also sentenced to 10 years for aggravated assault and the maximum punishment of 24 months in state jail for evading arrest in a vehicle. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Attempts to contact Gomez's defense attorney, Louis Gimbert, were unsuccessful Tuesday afternoon.
According to police reports and court documents, Gomez is one of three men believed to be involved in a June 2009 shooting and a high-speed chase with police.
Andrew Becerra, a passenger in the vehicle, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars last week for his role in the crimes.
Charges against Javier Alvarez, which include deadly conduct and engaging in organized criminal activity, are pending.
Crenshaw said attorneys are attempting to reach a plea agreement in that case, but a trial is possible.
According to court documents, Gomez shot a gun in the direction of an innocent bystander while trying to retaliate against a rival gang member.
The aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge stems from a separate incident, in April 2009, in which he shot at a rival gang member outside a convenience store.
