The city of College Station will soon receive nearly $300,000 that U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said would be used to increase job growth and community development.
The $299,821 from federal stimulus legislation comes in the form of a Community Development Block Grant.
"The City Council actually has allocated that funding to stimulate a larger project," said David Gwin, the city's director of economic and community development. "We have for a number of years done smaller projects across the community, but they gave us direction to develop a larger project to have a more lasting impact on the community as it relates to our lower-income population."
During the 2008-09 grant year, CDGB funds were used to support Twin City Mission, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Brazos Valley, Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center and the Brazos Valley Food Bank, along with other organizations.
The new plan is still in the preliminary stages, Gwin said, but it will involve developing a large, mixed-use real estate project.
Gwin said the money would be combined with $2 million the city already receives in federal funding.
Gwin said he hoped a clear plan would emerge within the next six to eight weeks.
"Once the City Council takes public action on a real estate transaction, we can talk about the details," he said.
