A Houston organization is hosting a walk in honor and memory of friends and family who suffer from Lou Gehrig's Disease.
The walk -- held annually in more than 150 locations nationwide -- begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central Park in College Station.
Residents can register to walk one to three miles or make a donation at www.alsa-houston.org.
Teams can be formed in the name of a loved one who has or had ALS.
Check-in is at 10 a.m. for the walk sponsored by ALS Association, which provides patient services, support groups, equipment loan program, international research and educational support.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the organization's Web site. There is no cure or treatment that halts or reverses ALS.
More than $110,000 was raised from all walks done last year; this year's goal is $180,000, officials said.
