A couple was released from jail Thursday morning after police said a woman assaulted an officer when he responded to a disturbance all at their Cameron home.
Officer John Mendoza said he responded to 607 West Eighth St. at 5 p.m. Wednesday after a caller said Leroy Lewis, 22, had a metal pipe and was trying to assault a family member.
When police responded, he was sitting in a chair in the house, Mendoza said. Lewis was handcuffed, was being "mouthy" and using foul language to officers as he was escorted outside, although he was complying with their requests, Mendoza said.
While Lewis was being escorted outside, Qwanisha Lewis, 17, -- Lewis' wife -- came outside and said asked officers to leave her husband alone, then pushed the officer in the neck, Mendoza said.
"She was pretty much attacking me," he said.
Mendoza said when he told her she was going to be arrested, she attempted to run and he had to chase her. He said he caught her, but she continued to resist arrest.
Qwanisha Lewis was charged with assault on a public servant and resisting arrest, and was released from the Milam County Jail Thursday on $27,500 bond. Assault on a public servant is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Resisting arrest is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.
Her husband was charged with disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $500. He was released from jail Thursday on a $250 bond. He did not injure anyone, Mendoza said.
