Coach Fran timeline at Texas A&M

• Dec. 5, 2002: Dennis Franchione is hired as the head coach of Texas A&M, replacing R.C. Slocum. His initial contract is set to pay him $1.7 million a year through 2010.

• Nov. 8, 2003: Texas A&M loses to Oklahoma 77-0 in Norman. It is the biggest loss in the history of A&M football. The team finishes its first season under Franchione 4-8 -- its first losing record since 1982.

• Oct. 30, 2004: 18th-ranked A&M loses to Baylor 35-34 in Waco, ending a 13-game winning streak against the Bears.

• Jan. 1, 2005: A&M earns a spot in the Cotton Bowl but loses 38-7 to Tennessee. The team ends its 2004 season with a 7-5 record. Following the game, A&M announces that Franchione's contract has been extended through 2012 and his pay has been raised to $2 million.

• June 25, 2005: Franchione announces that he has donated $1 million to the A&M athletic department. The money is designated for the school's indoor practice facility.

• Nov. 5, 2005: A&M is blown out by Texas Tech 56-17 in Lubbock a week after being crushed by Iowa State at home 41-14. The team finishes the 2005 season with a 5-6 record after being ranked 17th in the preseason AP poll.

• Nov. 4, 2006: After building up an 8-1 record in 2006 and a ranking of 21st, ESPN's College Gameday visits College Station for a game against 18th ranked Oklahoma. A&M loses the game by one point and Franchione is heavily criticized by fans for kicking a field goal in a late, short yardage situation. The team loses its next game to 25th ranked Nebraska 28-27.

• Nov. 24, 2006: A&M defeats Texas 12-7 for its first win over Texas in six years and Franchione finishes the regular season with a 9-3 record, the highest number of wins for A&M since 1998.

• Dec. 28: A&M loses to California 45-10 in the Holiday Bowl, bringing Franchione's bowl record to 0-2.

• Sept. 20: A&M loses to unranked Miami 34-17. The game leads to a spike in criticism among fans.

• Sept. 27: Franchione discontinues "VIP Connection," a secret newsletter that occasionally disclosed injury, grade and other insider information about the A&M football team. The newsletter was revealed by an article in the San Antonio Express-News. Athletics Director Bill Byrne said he did not know about the newsletter, which cost $1,200, prior to the revelation.

• Oct. 11: Details of a university investigation of the newsletter are released to the public at a press conference held by Byrne. "The Aggies are embarrassed right now," Byrne says. Franchione is admonished by the university and told to discontinue his Web site.

• Nov. 23: In what turns out to be his final game as A&M coach, Franchione leads the Aggies to a 38-30 upset victory over Texas. He then reads a statement announcing his resignation at the post-game press conference.
