Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee filed paperwork Monday to document a campaign treasurer for a likely run for Brazos County judge.
The action is not a formal declaration of his candidacy -- he still could opt not to run -- but it's the first step toward a campaign in 2010.
Reached by phone Monday night, Conlee declined to comment.
The official filing period doesn't begin until early December.
Conlee, a rental property owner and manager, is the second person to make a public move toward running for the seat, which has been held by Randy Sims for the past two terms. Sims announced earlier in the year that he wont seek re-election.
Former Bryan Mayor Ernie Wentrcek said in October that he planned to run for the office. Wentrcek served as mayor from 2004 to 2007 and was succeeded by Conlee.
Business owner Mitch Morehead has declared his intention to run for mayor of Bryan.
Other candidates are expected to throw their name in the hat for Brazos County judge, which pays just less than $90,000 a year. Any county officials contemplating a run must wait until a year before their current term expires to announce their candidacy or they must resign the position.
That rule does not hold true for officials who would change jurisdictions, as Conlee would if he were elected judge.
