The Bryan Police Department is urging drivers to be patient and use caution when traveling on the Earl Rudder Freeway frontage road in front of Sam Rayburn Middle School.
A construction project that will reconfigure the northbound freeway exit and entrance ramps between Boonville and Old Reliance roads has increased congestion, particularly when parents are picking up students between 3 and 4:15 p.m., officials said.
To ensure the safety of students and construction workers, the police department has begun posting officers in front of the school, and one lane of the frontage road will be closed after school is dismissed to prevent parking on the roadway. It is illegal to stop on the frontage road to load or unload passengers, officials said.
The lane closure will provide a safer access lane for vehicles entering the frontage road from the school parking lot, police said.
The changes will be in effect from 3 to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday and during some special events at the school until the construction project is completed. The work is expected to be finished in the summer, Texas Department of Transportation officials said.
The school zone speed limit on that stretch of road is 35 mph.
