* During the summer, set the thermostat at 78 degrees. You save about 3 percent on utility bills for every degree above 72.
* Use appliances before noon and after 7 p.m. to avoid peak-use times.
* Use cold water when possible to cut back on energy costs.
* Turn off appliances or lights that are not in use.
* During the summer, keep shades over south-facing windows closed during the day to prevent heat from entering the house.
* When a light bulb burns out, replace it with a compact fluorescent bulb. This also will help promote cleaner air.
* Clean the dryer lint screen and don't overload the dryer to save up to 5 percent on the electricity bill.
* Use ceiling fans. It costs just a penny an hour to run a ceiling fan versus 16 cents an hour for a room air conditioner and 43 cents an hour for central air.
* Recycle junk mail.
* Keep the refrigerator door closed. This appliance is the biggest energy consumer in the kitchen.
* Pay bills electronically. If every household paid credit card bills electronically, it would save almost $2 billion a year in postage costs.
