A storage building near Brenham was leveled in a fire Wednesday morning, but deputies on patrol noticed it in time to keep the flames from spreading to a nearby home, officials said.
Two Washington County sheriff’s deputies saw the blaze just after 1 a.m. at 5177 Texas 105, about five miles outside Brenham, Washington County Lt. Mike Herzog said.
The 3,000-square-foot building on fire — an unoccupied home that had been turned into a storage building for antiques — was just a few feet away from the main residence on the property.
A carport with two vehicles was in between the old home used for storage and a home occupied by the owners, Leroy Kramer and his wife, Herzog said. Deputies called the fire department and emergency medical services, and knocked on the door of the residence.
The couple was asleep until deputies banged on the door, Herzog said. They got the elderly couple, a dog and two cats out of the house. A truck in the carport wouldn’t start, and deputies pushed it away from the fire. They also drove a van out of the carport.
The fire was extinguished before it spread past the building, he said. Several antique items in the building were destroyed, but no one was hurt.
Brenham Fire Department Chief Ricky Boeker said his department, along with Meyersville Volunteer Fire Department — which is investigating the cause of the fire — and three other area departments helped extinguish the fire. Boeker said he didn’t know what caused the fire, but said it doesn’t appear suspicious.
Boeker said firefighters arrived five minutes after they were alerted to the fire, but it was already “fully involved” when they arrived. He estimated the building had been burning for 15 to 30 minutes.
“It was leveled,” he said. “There was nothing left.”
