Firms to pay $3M in deaths
By MATTHEW WATKINS
Eagle Staff Writer
The families of four Texas residents killed in a fiery 2006 crash on Texas 6 were awarded a multimillion-dollar judgment in a Robertson County court Friday.
Three of the people killed in the wreck were from Bryan-College Station.
Fort Worth-based T.J. Lambrecht Construction Inc., Bryan-based Young Contractors Inc. and Houston-based W.W. Webber LLC were ordered to pay the families $3,036,800.
The family of Bryan resident Sarah Nichols, 17, was awarded $717,500. Eighteen-year-old Bruce King's parents were awarded $600,000, and the family of Bryan resident Bryson Thompson, 18, was awarded $105,300.
The family of a 32-year-old Deer Park man was given $1.609 million.
The companies were all involved in construction work on Texas 6 south of College Station.
Lawyers for the family argued that the companies failed to take the necessary precautions in providing safe entries and exits to the construction site.
Witnesses testified in the trial that a contractor for the project was turning into the site when he stopped in the left southbound lane of the four-lane highway, which has no median.
The stopped vehicle caused a chain-reaction wreck, the lawyers argued.

Comment Title: others liable
I just want to point out that your information is not correct. Young Contractors, Inc. was found NOT LIABLE in this case. Also, you failed to name the other two defendents that were held more responsible than any of the companies. Next time you may want to publish correct information!

Comment Title: incorrect data and response to other comments
I believe that Mr. Watkins and his editor need to check to see how inaccurate their information is. I was actually a juror on this case and the information in this article is NOT CORRECT! Also, I don't understand how some of you can judge the decision made in this case when you are not aware of all of the information! Please remember there is a lot more to the case than you have read or seen on the news! As I have already stated, this very article is incorrect!!!!!

Comment Title: Unequal award
I don't under stand the difference in money awarded to the young people all in one car. I have heard a unreasonable excuse. All three died, all three were people. The one that owned the car should be awarded for that.I human isn't worth more in this case than another. DL

Comment Title: Tragic
I drove that way every day for months and passed that melted spot in the asphalt where those kids died. Tragic! Just down the road is a turn lane. Why didn't they use it?

You have the facts and verdict wrong. Young Contractors and its driver were found to be not negligent.

Comment Title: Finally
It's about time that big construction companies were held accountable for their negligence. I read that between them, T.J. Lambrecht and W.W. Webber have over $1 billion in TX DOT contracts. For that kind of money the taxpayer should get a little attention to safety.

Comment Title: Tragic Event, but.........
I know the surviving famly needs everthing they can get. How much of this would the lawyers get? Also I thought if you were hit in the rear, that the person behind you was at fault for following to close and not maintaing control of their vehicle????

Comment Title: Dont Understand
I dont understand the amounts for the young people. Why is the value of their lives different? I possibily understand the 32 year olds award if he had children, but I guess if you dont, the value of your life is less!
