Funeral services for former Grimes County Judge James P. Dixon are scheduled for Wednesday in Houston.
A visitation will start at noon, with the funeral following an hour later in the chapel at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Home, 13102 North Freeway. Burial will be at Houston National Cemetery.
The 81-year-old died Sunday with his family by his side at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
Dixon was elected in 2002 as the first Republican county judge since the Reconstruction period. He served one four-year term as the county's highest-ranking elected official.
Carolyn Neuman, a deputy county clerk in Grimes County, said she worked with Dixon on a daily basis while he was judge.
"It was enjoyable to be at work when he was there," she said. "He was very easy-going and easy to work for. He wasn't real demanding."
Dixon was dedicated to serving the community and had the county's best interest in mind, she said.
The Houston native served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War.
After working for AT&T for 38 years, Dixon retired in 1985 as the Houston district manager.
His retirement years were spent volunteering in the community through organizations that included the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons of the Confederacy.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nona V. Dixon, two daughters, a son, three stepsons and numerous grandchildren, along with other relatives.
