An $8.4 million construction project got under way Monday as local and national dignitaries officially broke ground on an interchange at Barron Road and Texas 6.
Most of the project, expected to take a year and a half to complete, is being paid for by the Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is contributing $6 million from federal economic recovery funds. The remaining amount was secured, in part, by U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco.
Edwards, along with College Station Mayor Ben White, Brazos County Judge Randy Sims and other officials, were at the site to discuss how the improvements would help ease traffic congestion while reducing serious accidents in the area.
Edwards said the project would create 45 local jobs as the development unfolds.
Texas Department of Transportation officials and the city hosted the event, which highlighted how the new overpass will move the highway over Barron Road.
The project is contracted to Navasota-based Glenn Fuqua Inc.
