A city of College Station transportation committee asked city staff members to draft changes to an ordinance regulating taxis after hearing from residents and businesses during a public meeting Thursday.
The committee met to gather information from residents, taxi companies, tourism officials and members of the police department.
Changes to the ordinance could require taxis to uniformly display rate information inside and outside the vehicles, set standards to ensure that cabs are properly maintained for safety, enhance penalties for overcrowding a taxi, and establish a place for passengers to lodge complaints.
Representatives from seven taxi companies spoke during the meeting with varying opinions on requirements for standardizing fares, the age of the vehicles and whether any changes even needed to be made.
"I think that clearly publishing of your rates is probably the most important things I've heard out of everybody," said committee member and City Councilman Larry Stewart.
