Hearne is now without its police chief, becoming the third area city to deal with an absence at the top of its chain of command.
Chief Gene Wilganowski is on administrative leave without pay for an unspecified amount of time, Hearne City Manager PeeWee Drake said.
Drake said the leave began Thursday and that "personal problems" are the reason for the absence.
Drake would not elaborate on the nature of the problems, and Wilganowski was unavailable for comment.
"Gene is an excellent police chief and we are looking forward to having him back," Drake said.
He said Lt. Thomas Williams will be assuming the duties of chief during Wilganowski's absence.
Wilganowski was named interim chief in July 2008 when former chief Robert Parsley resigned after the city council offered him a settlement.
Parsley said he felt pressure to resign because he had investigated a councilman and the relatives of two other councilmen.
Drake said there is no timetable for Wilganowski's return.
"I wish him the best," he said.
Bryan police Chief Ty Morrow is on paid administrative leave because of a domestic disturbance investigation and an internal affairs probe, and College Station's police chief, Michael Ikner, recently announced his resignation.
