Another Christmas has come and gone, and while the tree in your living room may not be as green as it was when you got it, there's still a green way to get rid of it.

Over the next few weeks, Bryan and College Station residents will have opportunities to dispose of their trees in an environmentally friendly way, city officials said.

"The main reason is to keep trees out of the landfill," said Jay Socol, a spokesman for the city of College Station. "Both cities have created some simple ways to do that."

There are three main options when it comes to recycling trees: Drop it off at a collection site, have it picked up off your curb during designated pickup dates or take it to the Bryan Compost Facility.

The tree dropoff day will be from noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 9. In College Station, the collection site will be at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park, while Bryan residents can visit Sue Haswell Park to recycle their trees.

Residents who drop off trees at the park will receive a free tree seedling.

College Station residents can set their trees on the curb to be picked up from Saturday through Jan. 9 or on their designated brush days. Curbside pickup has to be out by 8 a.m.

Bryan residents will have their trees picked up on the normal yard waste days for duplexes, fourplexes and single-family homes.

"It's an easy way to do the right thing for live trees and keep them out of the landfill. These are natural products that can be used in productive ways," Socol said. "This is a great example of reuse."

Recycled trees can be used to create tree-chip mulch, he said, which is used in soil where foot traffic is heavy to reduce erosion and provide natural nutrients.

In Bryan, officials said, the trees they receive will be taken to the Bryan Compost Facility.
